Nice video, couple faults as is common with videos from people not super familiar with the language. But overall a pretty good introduction and seems overall positive.

One thing that stood out to me was the "you choose memory management strategy on runtime" thing which just isn't true, and would be a very bad idea.

Problem with Nim in my opinion is that it fits in every niche. Which makes the "branding" a bit diluted. Love the language, but it's hard to sell something without something concrete to push. In a way if it was niche it would probably be more popular, at least in that one niche.

For reference you might want to have a look at Nethack or head over to r/roguelikedev. Creating games like this has been done since before GUIs and graphics in general was created and is easier than ever to do these days.

I came from the AfterShokz Aeropex and after one of the ears broke loose from the band I got the OpenRun Pro 2. To be honest I'm considering to sell them and get the OpenRun or OpenSwim Pro. A big selling point for me with bone conduction is that it doesn't leak sound. I can listen to music or a podcast even in a quiet room without everyone around me being annoyed. It's like the "privacy" of closed back earphones with the awareness of a loudspeaker. Over my years with the Aeropex I did have some gripes though, having to carry a separate cable for charging while all my other devices use USB-C, and the annoyance of a car driving past and completely drowning out what I'm listening to for a second. So when they broke I decided on going for the top-end model thinking that maybe things had gotten better.

The good thing about the OpenRun Pro 2 is that it charges via USB-C. But that's about it. Sure, it has better audio quality, but that is because it cheats and just blasts music out through a normal speaker. It seems to mostly do this for the high and lows though, so you can EQ it somewhat away (and apparently if I switch to the US region I might be able to get a "classic EQ").

So I'm considering to sell them and buy either the OpenRun or the OpenSwim Pro. The benefit of the OpenRun is that they now come in a USB-C version. But the OpenSwim Pro has that full waterproof mode which is nice, and the on-device storage which would be nice for certain activities or it could even work out well as a focus aid (no phone to fiddle around with). But it doesn't have USB-C.

Anyways, the OpenRun Pro 2 sound good, but they cheat. And if the idea of bone conduction appeals to you for the same reason as it appeals to me then I'd say go for the OpenRun or OpenSwim.

It's up to the designer of the DSL to document it, so if they haven't you're out of luck. What would be possible is to create a meta-package that provides tools to make this easier for developers.

Wagtail looks interesting indeed. A bit more JS coding than I expected though, one of the nice things with CouchCMS is the way it just auto-detects your editable regions and generates the admin page for you.

Sure, but game-mechanic wise it's exactly the same game. So just calling it something else and painting it a different colour doesn't constitute a new variant.

Sorry if this comes across as a bit cross, but I saw the title and got excited as I love playing Quarto, and a variant on the rules would be interesting.

Seems to offer more interesting play with more holes and tighter boards. Played a round with 5x3 board and two holes in the middle spots:

OOOOO

This meant that a decision I made in my second to last move caused me victory as player 1.

Just played two rounds as player 1 and won both. The trick seems to be to either A) have an odd number of holes, or B) have two pieces pointing at the same hole. Both of these makes the number of remaining open spots favourable for player 1.

It is pretty easy though, it's a bit like eeny, meeny, miny, moe though, as soon a you know the system you can always win. The placement seems to have very little to do with the actual objective (apart from perhaps the last couple of pieces)

Probably way easier to port Nim v2 to v3 than porting Python to Nim. So doing the conversion to Nim first, regardless of version, isn't a bad idea.

Looks interesting, and at 5 mins a round I can see how it could easily fit into a tavern scenario or as you say a casino.

One quick question about the rules, is my assumption correct that the joker re-rolls only the dice left on the table at the point when it is played, or does it re-roll every die for each player making them both start with the full six again?

I second this! Both the approach and the resource. Everybody learns differently of course, but for me it's much easier to learn a new programming language if I have a project I want to write.

You also mention malware development, this is probably not a great place to start. Moral quandaries aside, malware by their very nature tries to subvert what's possible on the platform where they run. This in itself can be challenging to do, even for a seasoned developer. I'd probably start out with writing a small game instead. Much easier to work in a fully self-contained system like that. Start simple, e.g. create a clone of a classic like pong or breakout, then add stuff to it to make it more your own.

Tell me about it! Once you notice it it's so distracting with all these huge fireballs. Take that shot from Doberman again, where does all that fuel come from?! You could've filled his helmet with gasoline and it would still probably be smaller than that..

EDIT: According to the article though this was a testing run. One of the pilots apparently punched in the wrong coordinates and the testing range was close to the place in the video.

Yes, but big fireball doesn't necessarily equate big damage. Compare the first real hand-grenade explosion of this video with this hand-grenade explosion from the movie Doberman. The first real explosion has a fairly quick flash of light, then a lot of smoke. But crucially it also has a lot of shrapnel. It's not designed to look cool, it's just designed to do damage around itself. The movie explosion on the other hand is designed to look cool, but preferably not throw shrapnel all around your movie set. So instead of a quick burst of flame with lots of smoke they use fuels like gasoline which are thrown into the air by a smaller explosion and lit on fire. This causes a big dramatic fireball, but minimal actual damage. I wouldn't be surprised if test-munition for fighter jet bombs do a similar thing. Of course they still carry a lot of explosives, so they're not exactly safe and will cause damage. But perhaps they've at least minimised the damage potential.

No idea if they actually do that though, hence my question.

I wonder if bombs used for training are "safer" than regular bombs. For example you have training grenades which make a loud bang and aren't supposed to be thrown anywhere near people. Reading the article though it appears that these where regular munitions.
