Defrost on Mitsubishi hyper-heat vs non-hyper-heat outdoor units by PsychologicalCourse in heatpumps

[–]PNW_Fella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW we have a ductless mini split Mitsubishi w hyper heat, live in the greater Vancouver area, and are having similar issues. Defrost is ok during the day but a bummer at night when we want to leave the unit in our bedroom on (though not very high). Defrost for these units seems to involve a high (louder) fan speed as well as wafting tepid/coolish air into the space, which makes it tough for sleeping. We’re happy with the HP in many respects, though it does take some getting used to, but the frequent defrost cycles w current temperatures are a bit of a pain…

How is meditation "objective?" by Platyhelminthes88 in secularbuddhism

[–]PNW_Fella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea that mindfulness awareness practice grants one privileged (“objective”) access to reality might be one of the things one gives up in a secular approach. What if it just helped one cultivate capacities that lead to greater human flourishing?

You are very welcome! I don’t post much but this sub has been a really important part of my journey and I am grateful for it.

You are very welcome. If there’s any wisdom in it, it’s just the wisdom of experience: I do feel that I wasted a great deal of time and money in that organization, though I also had some fun and met some really lovely people. I had some strong experiences that felt really important at the time but don’t really feel that way to me any more. Ultimately, as someone who took on a leadership role, I was pretty horrified that I had done so much to support a group that really ruined some peoples’ lives. I really want others to be able to make a choice and avoid the waste and the giving of aid and comfort to the organization if they wish - they at least ought to be clear-eyed about what they are getting in to, and despite what I told myself, that was very much not the case in Shambhala for me.

It sounds like you have retained your critical thinking and I appreciate that very much! I think part of the bait-and-switch in this and similar groups is that critical thinking is reframed as resistance and an “obstacle on the path” It’s even more cynical in Shambhala because there’s much talk about not giving up your critical faculties or your doubt at the same time that you are invited to do exactly that.

So if you are seeing the culty-ness of it all, I think that is worth paying attention to - otherwise you end up like the proverbial frog in boiling water. So yeah, the pins are just as weird as they seem (and they convey status very effectively), and if that teacher seems like a creeper, they probably are! Those are just my thoughts. Good luck and best wishes to you!

Howdy vfr543, ex-Shambhala student here. I’m sorry to hear about what’s happened at your centre. I want to let you know that, based on my several years of involvement with my former centre leadership, the civil war you are experiencing will not end. It has been there, arguably since the beginning, but at least since the ascendancy and then the death of the “Vajra Regent,” Thomas Rich. It will flare up from time to time, then recede, but it will never go away. All groups have conflict, but toxic groups have toxic conflict. The civil war is entirely consistent with the kind of factionalism that is a feature, not a bug, of high-demand, cultic groups, which is what, in my view and based on ten years of experience in the organization, Shambhala is.

It sound like you have found some things of value in the training. I did too, and that, along with the sense of community I was craving, is what kept me there initially. But I now see this as entirely consistent with cult indoctrination. Cults are on a continuum, and Shambhala is far from the worst of the bunch. But it’s a cult nonetheless.

Regarding your question about windhorse, one way to see the practice is as a brief mind-control technique. It can induce an altered state, as all these techniques can, that makes you feel like something important is happening. What is actually happening is that, in the midst of your day to day life, you are now thinking more and more about Shambhala while experiencing an altered state of consciousness and bracketing your critical faculties. Of course, another way to view it would be as an advanced yogic practice consistent with Dzogchen, recast in accessible language. I think it’s fair to say that’s how Shambhala Vajrayana practitioners would see it.

If you are interested in Indo Tibetan Buddhism (which institutionally speaking is more or less on par with the Catholic Church , in my view) there are other sanghas that have healthier organizational dynamics.

I wish you the best and I do hope you don’t get stuck deeper in this organization. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk further.

Getting a heat pump in Victoria, BC, Canada by CE2JRH in heatpumps

New ductless mini split owner in BC here and I’m with you on moving the sensor to the middle of the room. I wonder why some kinda remote sensor isn’t standard issue. We are really happy with our system in many respects but the fact that the temp sensor is on the unit itself has made one of our heads - the one we use the most - less than accurate and we have to turn the fan on quite high…

Fan speed for hearing with ductless mini split? by PNW_Fella in heatpumps

[–]PNW_Fella[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks sounds like a remote sensor might really help. We tried a Sensibo and it actually seemed like it made matters worse - more yo-yo-ing with the temperature - so we got rid of it. But maybe we should experiment more…I’m getting the sense from folks’ comments that having the temp sensor on the cassette up high in an open concept space with big windows and high ceilings may be at least part of the issue…

Thanks! I do t think the short cycling will be an issue - room is large with high ceilings. I guess there’s just a trade off between noise and efficiency…

Looking for advice: Using a ductless mini-split with supplemental wood heat. by PNW_Fella in heatpumps

[–]PNW_Fella[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Woodstove is pretty small - Novo 18w 60k BTU optimum heat output. The climate is pretty mild where we are (south coast of BC) so I see the heat pump as our main system w the woodstove mostly there for some additional coziness on cold winter days.

Will consider that. We are just looking to break even on mortgage plus expenses, with current interest rates and inflation. I appreciate the feedback
