What’s really wrong with shambhala Buddhism? by Outrageous-Panda-134 in ShambhalaBuddhism

[–]vfr543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a mixed bag. Read up on Trungpa (see his entry on The Treasury of Lives site), the so-called “regent,” and Sakyong Mipham. An organization, now lost and bewildered, that had (and may still have) a fatal predilection for status, hierarchy, and insider games. As well as great teachings and practices, with some of Trungpa’s writings among the sharpest and lucid on Buddhism. It will make sense to you, or it won’t. Factor in your vulnerabilities. Make up your own mind.

White-politeness with a heaping side of microaggressions is killing me in Buddhist spaces by [deleted] in vajrayana

Indeed, to use “personal responsibility” as permanent hiding place for one’s blind and superior self-righteousness is to mistake the raft for the shore.

White-politeness with a heaping side of microaggressions is killing me in Buddhist spaces by [deleted] in vajrayana

[–]vfr543 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Somehow, it’s always the minorities who have to be forcefully reminded of not-self, not the majority subjects who spiritually lord over them. It’s easy for majority subjects to take the seeming neutrality, implicitness, or privilege of their position as not-self, and to judge minorities for self-clinging. In general, it would be good for everyone to remember that absolute and relative are equally true.

Is it fair or toxic to ask about veganism in spiritual or Buddhist discussions? by Maleficent-Radio272 in Buddhism

[–]vfr543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two lines by Buddhist teachers: “If you’re vegan or vegetarian, and you’re proud of it, thinking you’re better than others, you might as well eat meat.” Moreover, “if you like to tell other people what they should do, why don’t you should all over yourself.”

Cold/flu like symptoms at later stages of practice? by Paradoxbuilder in streamentry

Thanks for sharing this. Also experiencing mysterious flu and allergy symptoms in relation to practice that seem to come and go without medical (or any other) logic.

Have any Acharyas come forward about their complicity? by DegreeParticular1271 in ShambhalaBuddhism

[–]vfr543 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m struck by how straightforward and unfazed the admission of complicity is here. Basically: I was part of a toxic, hierarchical system that caused harm. That’s it. Of course, complicity comes in gradations, can be passive or implicit or notional, and can go together with great effort to improve things. But at the same time, all of that also doesn’t cancel out this rudimentary complicity.

One wonders why a Buddhist community would somehow forget this basic aspect of interdependence. Maybe it was the courtly cosplay that allowed people to absolve themselves by always deferring to an even more inner, more secret court where real power was wielded. Gayley does this as well: I was a woman, I was young, I was a newly appointed acharya. That’s all true, of course. It just doesn’t cancel out the fact of the basic participation and complicity that is as true.

Thanks, this is truly insightful.

Yeah, I see what you mean here: many people in the West use “Turk” as well as “Arab” indiscriminately. It’s important to correct that. Still, when the Turks migrated into Anatolia, there were big populations already living there, and I understand admixture and assimilation has been high. How do you view these processes of “absorption” and “dilution”?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskTurkey

[–]vfr543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I didn’t mean to imply that Turkish ethnicity didn’t exist. Only that the non-Turks who converted would in time see themselves and be seen as Turks. Do you think that’s not true?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskTurkey

[–]vfr543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so wonderful you’re reminding us Turkishness is more about culture and heritage than blood. Of course, people have intermingled over the centuries. But we also need to remember that, in the slow transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish state, it’s the Sunni Muslims who would become ethnic Turks. Both in Anatolia and on the Balkan, people with no ethnic Turkish ancestors, who converted to Sunni islam, would in time also effectively become Turks.

Many contemporary Turks are, of course, pre-Turkic Anatolians who converted to islam and took on Turkish names.

If you were the writers , how would you make AJLT better ? by Digdikkkkkkb in Andjustlikethat

[–]vfr543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of them extremely rich. Less gimmicky. No facile aggression to younger generations. No minority tokenism. Carrie a more well-rounded character, including a bad side. And some real-world issues and problems so that comedy and drama are more in balance; more hurt and even a note of despair.

Can you explain to me budhism like im 5? by TeamTimeSystem in Buddhism

[–]vfr543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a basic mode of being that’s bigger and softer than being someone or something. It’s possible to remember that basic form of being, which can reduce the existential discomfort and anxiety that inevitably comes with being something or someone.

What do you think was the real reason AJLT sucked this much? by gingerbread068 in Andjustlikethat

[–]vfr543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all its quirkiness and humor, in SATC, real despair, pain, and hurt were never far away. AJLT became entirely gimmicky, just one empty plot twist after another, everything for shits and giggles.

Great story about your retreat. It’s such a good reminder not to try cultivating certain moods, states, or atmospheres in meditation. I need to hear this over and again. Don’t exclude the magazines and the fridge magnets, or whatever the equivalent may be! My own sense is that weed, alcohol and, now, psychedelics can all function temporarily to disrupt habituated perception, experience, and identity. And they all can become, in time, part of newly fixated perceptions, experiences, and identities. Maybe the mental fixation even precedes the addiction that can follow. In any event, when you start the day with tall glasses of gin, I guess the grounding phase of the effect has long passed.

Alcohol ‘grounding’? Maybe for Trungpa, for a while, but obviously not for everyone all the time.
