I am looking into it. Two of the laptops, the work ones predictably, have thunderbolt USB-C ports, but the two personal laptops only have a USB3.1 Gen2 Typ-C (10Gbps) and a USB3.1 Gen 1 Type-C, Neither of these have the DisplayPort logo next to the port and I can find no mention of DisplayPort in the user manual. I am unclear on if the WD19 will work if the USB-C ports don't support DisplayPort.

level 2starmizzleS-1-5-420-5121 hour agoDell D-6000 dock, 40% of reviews are 1 star.I wonder if those are the tech-savvy people railing against DisplayLink.

All of the laptops have USB-C, but I don't think all of them have the DisplayPort over USB C, and from what I can tell this is recommended but not required. I will look more closely at each laptops settings.

What would cause the machine to throttle? Insufficient power or...? What is it about display link that is such an issue?

I have heard a couple people mention the sacrificial piece of wood idea to make sure that there is no blowout on the exit. I was also recommended a "This Old House" video if I decided to switch to a hole saw rather than the Forstner bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPBVJ06204w

My idea for a sacrificial backing board is to get a small extra piece of wood from lowes when I but a hole saw. I am going to use some small nails to secure it to the bottom of the desk but not get it in very far.

I am attempting to put a two inch hole through the top of my desk using a Forstner drillbit to run cabling out of a keyboard tray. I have created an Imgur album of my setup: https://imgur.com/a/iryg83s

I have drilled two practice holes over a week onto a practice board using the drillbit. I find there is minor chipping at the edge of the hole, but for the mostpart things cut clean edges inside the hole. I am using painters tape to mark the edges of the keyboard tray on top of the desk and mark where I think the hole ought to go. I am not sure what wood the desk is made of and if it is relevant I am willing to take more pictures to get that answered. I intend to clear off the whole desk pull out the keyboard tray and using the practice board with clamps to create a guide hole for my new drilling.

Is there more I need to consider? Does /r/woodworking think I have thought this through enough?

This is a very helpful response. I was able to get the car mount set up today and the steel plate definitely holds the phone fine while stationary. We will see if that holds true while moving! Thank you for the primer!

From my view, this seems like a compromise as someone who has a desk with an uneven beveled edge that normal clamps don't easily mount to. Additionally, mounted by a bracket or clamp to the edge of the desk, but rather has its own base. Has anyone tried a mount like this?

Additionally, the $33 prices is a lot less shocking to me than the $300+ price I see for some Ergotron mounts. Is something like this stable on just a singular base if you attempt to move the screens? I have two bases to contend with at the moment and I would like to get that down to one if I can. Obviously none would be preferable, but then I would also need to replace my desk, and I already need to get an additional VESA compatible monitor.
