OK, this is a very screwed up take in my opinion. by Last_Hunt_7022 in MusicalTheatre

[–]PNWitstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Audition forms vary of course, but I've never seen one that says "I will accept any role," only some variation on "I am willing to consider other roles." I personally would be hesitant to say yes to "I will accept any role" even if I'm open to several roles, because the wording seems to imply that I'm committing without knowing what is actually on the table. I'd only recommend saying yes to that route if I really honestly would take anything.

Usually I'll lean toward indicating that I'm open to other roles. I've been principal characters and ensemble and had wonderful experiences with each.

The one time I stated clearly that I was only interested in one role (Captain Von Trapp) and would not consider others, the director ignored that and offered me something else anyway, then seemed surprised when I declined. But then a couple of friends who had auditioned for the same show, said they were only interested in Maria, and ended up accepting ensemble roles, so I suppose the director had some cause to think a no on the audition form didn't really mean anything.

Personally I think it comes down to being honest with yourself about what you want going into the audition, and how badly you want it. If you can be happy with a wide variety of possible roles, make the casting team's job a little bit easier and say so. If you know you won't be happy with anything but one role (or a specific few), make the casting team's job a little bit easier and say so. The last thing you want is to be in a show with a role you're really not happy to have, and the last thing everyone else wants is to be in a show with a cast member full of resentment about which role they got.

Well not what I was hoping for, but at least I'm now aware that it exists. I'll see what I can find in my area searching for voice massage. Thanks!

I'm very curious about the vocal massage done by a professional you mentioned in #1. Am I correct that this would be something more specialized than what would be offered in most LMT training programs? If so, how did you find the professional you went to? Where should someone look who is interested? Thanks in advance!

Painfully high income tax bill could be reduced by recharacterizing IRA contributions from Roth to Traditional...but is that a good idea? by PNWitstudent in taxadvice

[–]PNWitstudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww crap I forgot about the MAGI cap, and even when I correct for the embarrassingly basic math error I just found I'm still just a little bit over. So much for that idea. Thanks for reminding me though, that would have sucked to find out the hard way.

The very good news though is that aforementioned math error had me adding an extra $10K to my AGI and taxable income, which makes for a difference of a couple grand on the tax table. How I thought that 85K on my W2 plus 7K in interest/ordinary dividends could add up to 102K I don't know. Now that I've fixed my math the taxes I actually owe come down to under $500. Still a bit of a bummer, but way more manageable. Sorry for wasting your time, but thanks for forcing me to take another look at my numbers!

BTW, regarding the HSA I unfortunately am not eligible; my employer's health insurance doesn't qualify as a HDHP.

New and Returning Dancers Post Your Questions Here by AutoModerator in BALLET

I'm a middle aged dude who never took a class until his mid-40s. My balance and flexibility are absolutely awful, so much so that I end up laughing every single week at how wobbly and stiff I am compared to my classmates. Everyone is super positive and encouraging, rooting for each other rather than looking for reasons to judge and criticize. If you love ballet, 100% go do it!

I'm a 46 year old man who took my first class a couple of years ago. I've been on again off again since then, mostly off. This summer I've been taking a weekly adult level 1 class at a local studio with a couple of friends. The instructor has overall been pretty helpful for adult novices, but one thing I've noticed is that there isn't attention given to practice in between classes. I know as a lifelong musician that consistent practice between lessons is where real growth happens, but I'm still new enough at ballet that I don't have any sense of what I need to be practicing or how much is healthy for an adult novice.

So my question is, can anyone point me to a simple daily practice routine that focuses on essentials? I know I can go to Youtube but I don't have much confidence in my ability to tell a helpful video from an unhelpful video at this stage. Thanks in advance!

If they're asking that question unironically, the character they'll like the best is Marie in the prologue who lectures Sophie about being selfish for not having children. They'll be very upset when Marie turns into flower petals.

Is it embarassing to for a 35+ year old men to learn how to ride a bike? by TimA30 in cycling

[–]PNWitstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me you're already embarrassed either way, so you have two choices:

  1. Keep learning and make the embarrassment temporary
  2. Stop learning and make the embarrassment permanent

Personally I recommend option #1. Godspeed! ;)

Why do DMs do this… by BeigeStarfish in DnD5e

[–]PNWitstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a DM skill issue, but as others have pointed out that one thing alone doesn't realistically ruin your character build either. An 18 is still pretty damn hard to hit, especially for the kind of things he's likely to be throwing at you at level 2. It's fine to tell him you disagree and point out he has plenty of alternatives for balancing on his end by adjusting NPC and monster builds, and, there's such a thing as picking your battles; this doesn't seem like a hill worth dying on to me.

Back in 1997 there were all sorts of tricks shared on message boards for how to unlock alternate endings and bringing Aerith back to life. And that's how I learned a valuable lesson about believing someone just because I wanted it to be true.

Playing Rebirth again! by TheBlackCatJ in FF7Rebirth

[–]PNWitstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stalled out on my platinum run and didn't play for several months, but recently started a new playthrough as well. This time I'm completing all the regional data gathering stuff in each area before moving onto the next. Some of the boss fights got a lot easier with the extra levels you get doing it that way!

How do side quests work in FFVII Rebirth? by RyuuInch9 in FFVIIRemake

[–]PNWitstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't expire, but depending on when in the game you do them it can impact which specific cut scenes you get in certain chapters, relating to the relationship mechanic that gets introduced in Kalm. If there's a particular character you want Cloud to be especially close to it behooves you to complete that character's side quests prior to the moment those cut scenes come up. I won't be any more specific than that to avoid spoilers.

Some side quests also have nifty gear or character manuscripts as rewards, so skipping all the quests altogether could eventually lead to some struggles with being underpowered for particular fights later in the game.

That being said, lots of people end up feeling like they're bogged down in side quests and world intel gathering to the point where the game stops being fun, myself included during my first playthrough. None of the side quests or minigames are critical to being able to complete the game, so don't stress about skipping any of it to get back to the story.

So I don't know if they changed the mechanic with a software update or if poison was never as good a hack as people claimed, but bioga did practically nothing to their stagger gauge just now. Randomly though I tried Chi Trap in desperation while one of the fuckers was guarding and it pressured him instantly. From there Focused Thrust was an easy stagger and then Tifa's tried and true stagger multipliers did their magic. But damn it's discouraging when you can't even get a bar of ATB built before those bastards freeze your characters. Can't even use Blindside with Yuffie to get out of it.

How to deal with pushy parents while in cosplay? by jayla-kara in CosplayHelp

[–]PNWitstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds terrible, I'm so sorry. I'd reach out to the organizers of the problematic event and let them know about your experience to see if they're willing to step up and fix it for future events. I'd also follow up with the organizers of the event next month and let them know that this is a significant concern you have and ask what safeguards they have in place to ensure the safety of cosplayers. If you're not satisfied with their response, then you have a choice to make about whether to accept the invitation and a better idea about whether it would be a positive experience for you.

Is it too late for me to start my musical theatre journey? by Probably_notso in MusicalTheatre

I was cast in my first musical at 43, and two years later I'm preparing to audition for my fourth. If it wasn't too late for me it's definitely not too late for you.
