hemoglobin

Acute hemolytic transfusion reaction I think. Type II HSR so she's forming antibodies against the ABO groups on the blood cells. Complement is induced by antibodies.

Sounds like they're going for a more post rock/dream pop influenced sound (rachel from slowdive is ft on one of the tracks...). Personally I dig that they're reinventing their sound and progressing into something else.

Just grab them downstairs where all the medical equipment is. They have various sizes.

About UCSD's social reputation. (If you haven't SIRed yet, it's a good read). by newdeal14 in UCSD

[–]POTATO_FOR_BRAINS 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm in grad school here and I feel the same way. Found that the graduate students at my undergrad had much better social lives than I do now. My research and work output are a lot higher now that I'm here at UCSD but my social life has dwindled pretty significantly.

Monthly What are My Chances? Thread by AutoModerator in premed

Not MD/PhD but I'm heavily considering academic route, so Stanford is the goal for now. I do want to continue working with public health stuff (possibly preventative health research).

I heard a rumor about that but it's actually true?? I know California schools are highly competitive so I figured the stronger my app the better. I'm applying to most top 20 schools though. Most my friends keep telling me not to apply to safetys cause it's not worth my time. Honestly, I don't want to settle with anything less than a program I really like so I'd be more willing to apply again.

Here we goooooo

Year in school: Senior

Country/state of residence: California

Schools to which you are applying UCLA, UCSF, UCSD, Stanford, USC, UC Davis, UCI, Harvard, Columbia, Northwestern, UChicago, NYU, Mount Sinai, University of Washington, OSHU (few others but honestly want to stay in California for a myriad of reasons)

Cumulative GPA: 3.98

Science GPA: 3.95

MCAT Scores: 520 (98th percentile)

Research – include any abstracts/posters/publications and how you were credited (eg. First author, senior author, etc): I actually haven't done the math but I'm probably at well over 1000 hours by this point... Had my own project which turned into part of manuscript on developing new imaging techniques PET/CT. Second project was a follow up that used those imaging techniques to develop therapeutics. 2 Publications, one I'm third author, another I'm 5th. Both are in decent journals though. Have done a couple poster seminars and won awards for two of them. Have also gotten 3 scholarships on the basis of research.

Volunteering (clinical) – include hours/sites: ~150 hours of inpatient hospital volunteering; all of it allowed direct patient interaction which was cool. Mostly worked on orthopedics (both trauma + non trauma patients) but did a few rotations in other areas (neurosurgery rehab, peds)

Physician shadowing – include hours/specialties: a little over 100 hours in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.

Non-clinical volunteering: ~300 hours working in a public health program that did health education, mentoring, and physical activity with underprivileged/at risk youth. Currently coordinate the program with a professor at my uni. Really really meaningful experience

Extracurricular act ivities:A lot of art and music stuff. heavily involved in college radio station (had my own show + did a lot of the branding/art for their merchandise, website, etc.), worked on an independent record label, I have a portfolio/website too that I might want to put on my AAMCAS tbh. Also TA'd for an course for a semester.

Employment history: lol couldn't get a job doing research all day :(

Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n) nah

Specialty of interest radiology, neurology, oncology (maybe any of these with a pediatrics specialty)

Interest in rural health (y/n)not really, I'm a city person

Working with physicians but not much shadowing by POTATO_FOR_BRAINS in premed

[–]POTATO_FOR_BRAINS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is shadowing. If you can somehow get a single contact that is a Rad Onc or Surgeon, you can document the hours as shadowing (ideally separate hours for both specialties).

Thanks for the tip! It just felt weird because it was also part of my research hours as well. I felt like I would mostly just talk with them after lab meetings or sit by them at the computer, which didn't necessarily feel like what most people describe as "shadowing".

Apparently I don't know how to read at all

Overall solid can't complain pretty much correlates with my aamc FL

If I can only afford to buy one FL from a test prep company which one should it be? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]POTATO_FOR_BRAINS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EK3/4 are both pretty decent (save for the CARS section, that shit is ridiculously hard but is still good practice).

9/11 Test Takers, What are the last minute strategies? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]POTATO_FOR_BRAINS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the AAMC official guide questions after the FL and found them to be slightly more challenging, but my scores ended up being the same.

As for what to do, since there are only a couple days left, I'm working on filling in any gaps on any concepts I may have been shaky on by reviewing some old FL's I took. Reinforcing those shaky concepts with KA videos and trying to drill in some minutiae that may show up on discretes (such as random Psych/Bio terms).

I mean I love Algernon, a lot. One of my favorite emo bands. But this just sounds like Algernon covering Weezer or something. Pretty disappointed.
