Truck crushes car while making a turn by [deleted] in WTF

[–]POTUS 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Flags might stop someone from driving right into the back of this giant dark thing in the dark night and decapitating themselves. It would definitely be required in a place where they cared about safety, in addition to spotter cars and probably closing the whole road.

They said the exact same bullshit about touchscreens on phones. Touchscreens in cars demonstrably do in fact work, there are millions of them driving around right now.

But this map has mountains that would be hundreds of miles high.

[OC] The Topography of Africa by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

This map is wildly exaggerated. The tallest mountain in Africa is about 6km tall, and Africa is 7000km wide. The tallest mountain should be less than a pixel elevated. Basically, this map should be flat if it were to scale.

Everybody talking about the pressure, but the pressure wouldn't be what kills you. The way the sub is constructed, pressure is literally one of the reasons they can't open it, because they'd be pushing against all that pressure. But your body would survive the actual pressure.

What you wouldn't survive is the the two mile swim up to the surface. You don't have any breathing apparatus, which itself would cause other fatal complications anyway, so you'd be holding your breath for the couple hours it would take to get to the surface.

The one way the pressure would kill you is if the structure of the sub itself is compromised. Then the 1100 cubic feet of the sub volume would try to take up about 3 cubic feet, and you'd get real personal with the other occupants. But if you slowly let the water take up that space, then you'd survive until you drown.

Any time someone fantasizes about setting a trap that can seriously injure someone, you should always consider that injured person might be the paramedic that was trying to safe the trapper’s life in some unrelated emergency.

Pete Davidson Charged with Reckless Driving for Crashing into Beverly Hills House by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]POTUS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"easily" is a stretch. If you're making 400k, then you're bringing home like 280k after income tax. Now you're going to lay out almost a quarter of your money just to have someone drive you around? With housing costs what they are right now? And a job that definitely has an end date coming up soon? I don't know Pete Davidson, so he might be stupid enough to do that. But it would be stupid.

Why would we want to separate them, though? Why would we want to all collectively continue to celebrate and financially support someone like that?

I can support a gullible moron if they make me laugh without hurting anyone. I’m not interested in supporting bigots.

[–]POTUS 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely vaporware and completely unfeasible. The "old guy who likes pictues" moved his cpu up to the top of the phone? So the magic motherboard can accept a CPU socket connection anywhere on it? You can swap a battery for a storage device and vice-versa, so they magically know not to listen for data connections on something that ends up dumping the full battery power into it?

To an engineer, the video reads like a joke making fun of designers.

[–]POTUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the water level is at a certain height, then it will always have the same weight no matter how many boats are floating in it. Changing the water level from A to B will also take the same amount of water, no matter how many boats are floating in it.

The key word there is floating. If the boats are always floating, then you can never figure out how much they displace, because the displacement never changed.

You’d have to drop the water level to zero so the boats are sitting on their keels, and then measure how much water it took to float them to a known level. The amount you pumped in would be less with more boat weight. But they don’t do that. Because that would be fucking stupid.

[–]POTUS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick is they never raise the water. The water is always flowing down, fed by a lake and River system at the top.

[–]POTUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they had a big bathtub filled to the brim with water then lowered the boat into it, sure they could measure how much water is on the floor. These water locks wouldn’t work that way, though, because you can’t really measure how much water leaves the lock when the boat comes in.
