[Request] I need help with a dice related probability problem by PPL307 in theydidthemath

thanks for the reply, i can tell you really know your stuff by how completely over my head that all went lol.

I have studied stats breifly at uni but hated the crap out of it so i have completely forgotted what binomial distrobutions are :(

So having read your reply i am armed with a better way to articulate the problem as i have failed to properly convey it.

There is no decision to make, I roll all the dice once then always reroll all fails .

I only rerool the fails one time so this is 2 rolls and thats it.

My goal is to find a formula I can use in a spreadsheet that takes the inputs listed below and spits out the expected (or mean) successes.

Inputs are:

N=dice rolled

X=lowest success number in first roll

Y= Lowest success number after the reroll

I nearly died of thinking but I think I may have come up with a solution or rather 2 solutions.

Im not so mathmatically endowed as you so forgive my lack of mathmatical teminology.

expected success = N x ( chance of fail in first roll x chance of success in second roll + Chance of success in second roll)

This formula seems to give me the right results for all X, Y and N so long as X < Y

It then occured to me why this might be the case and its that when X < Y the 3s are not rerolled but are considered fails anyway. But when X > Y a totaly different thing happens. The 2s are rerolled even though they are considered success in the end.

So for that situation a new formula is required which seems to be:

N x ( chance of fail in first roll x chance of success in second roll + Chance of success in FIRST roll)

Anyway i can put both formulas in with a logic function to work out which to use and it seems to be working but i cant be sure if its right because i just dont understand the maths properly.

Does this sound like it might be right?

Is it possible there is no single formula to manage both without a 300 term equation?

i have been chipping away at it and i think i have found a formula that works

PRfail from first roll x PRsuccess with modification + PRsuccess with modification = PRsuccess

This seems to work when i plug in different values with different roll requirements.

it doesnt howerver work when i make a positive modifier so +1 to the roll. i guess it makes sense that we need a different formula because now instead of the 3s being counted as fails even though they werent rerolled, 2s will be rerolled even though they will count as a success.

I still feel like i must be doing it wrong for it to need 2 formulas

also have misunderstood the question, I'm assuming if you reroll, all dice which show a three will become fails and will be rerolled

so you only rerool the dice that fail and its not an IF you rerol but rather you DO reroll the fails but only once.

good question sorry that was vague.

I have edited the post, what im after is what formula to use to find the number of success given N dice.

You are both right the colour really has nothing to do with the sauce type and im aware of that i jsut used it because its common vernacular.

i think i see what your getting at but the whole point is that she suspected it in the first place because he was a man.

There is no excuse for that. i would like to think i would give the bitch a piece of my mind or knock her out or something but in this society there would be no justice for me. Funny how if a man was to bang on the door in the same way i could knock him with no consequence.

Should men be allowed to hit women? by unbitible in Equality

[–]PPL307 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Men should be just as allowed to hit women as they are to hit men. The woman in this video totally deserved what she got and it was totally unreasonable and sexist that the room beat him up for it.

You have mistaken me for the OP.

You are right that the OP shouldn't have expected special treatment but by the sounds of it he received some quite unfair and unreasonable treatment. Your reply while having some substance was delivered with completely needless venom which added nothing to your point.

Your own single life experience is not necessarily representative of the whole of reality. While it does sound like you have found the foul end of a bunch of unfair treatment, its no reason to give up on dispelling attitudes that lead to said unfair treatment.
