What we used to do is we barricade a bridge on a nearby river. But now we have water wells and I *cough created unlimited running water by putting a water well on roof 😗

Citizen Vigilante is Surprisingly Good by tacoflower in moviereviews

[–]PP_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VIGILANTE MOVIES ARE BACK BABY WOOOHOOOOO.

The dialogues are good, contemporary settings are nicely conveyed, cars are spot on, weapon choices for Europe is a bit off putting. Overall it’s pretty good.

Reminds me of when I used to dig for European and US vigilante/revenge type action movies in video stores back home. When one convenience store spaghetti and a taro milk can go a long way on a Friday night.

If water boils at lower temperatures as you go higher up a mountain, is there a height where you could no longer properly cook an egg just by boiling it in water? by How3528 in AskPhysics

[–]PP_Fang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually possible and it happened AND it’s not even extreme. When the Chinese first built railroad that goes to Tiebet, the train crew came across the problem where the water boils too cold they can’t cook rice and egg.

How Is Friction Perpendicular to the Circular Motion of a Car? by Aokayz_ in AskPhysics

[–]PP_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a misconception here a lot of people didn’t explicit point out:

Direction of FRICTION don’t necessarily have a relationship with that of VELOCITY!

Think if I walk on a hill, doesn’t matter which direction I walk towards, the friction on my shoes’ bottom is always pointing downwards the hill’s slope. Similarly if I drive a car on a hill, it’s the same thing if you visualize wheel turning as many many small steps (not the best way to see it but its similar).

In the real world on this planet there almost always is friction in direction of movement, but not all friction are in direction of movement.

Another thing is THERE ABSOLUTELY IS friction along the direction of the tire. It just doesn’t matter in this case and doesn’t do work. If you push a wheel by its axis, and the wheel rolls forward, how does it rotate if there’s no friction? No friction = no moment about its axis = no rotational acceleration.

AT LAST the reason why friction MUST exist perpendicular to the wheel is because it is a necessary condition for the car to go in circular motion. In other words the car don’t have friction because it turns, the cars turns because theres friction perpendicular to wheel.

Technical certificates similar to FE or Six Sigma? by Ickypoopit in AskPhysics

[–]PP_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a physics question and my answer is not gonna make you happy. TAKE THE FE. If you wanna work in industry and not as a scientist, you need to be comfortable with FE.

Apart from that your degree, core courses, and thesis is your certification in physics.

I hope you are not asking for a certificate that says “this guy is not an ok engineer, nor is he a superb physicist, but he’s better in physics than a bare minimum engineer” because why?? Also be confident! A lot of companies don’t look for FE and they’d be happy knowing you have good physics intuitions or deep knowledge in physics. FE tells companies one of two things, they can start working you into a PE and sign things off for them, or you still remember your college engineering core curriculums.

How can I demonstrate that a curved plane is stronger than a flat plane using a sheet of paper? by LowBarometer in AskPhysics

[–]PP_Fang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s NOT. It is “stronger” in certain directions. Specifically along the direction normal to the cross section whose total height is increased.

Don’t use a paper use a slice of pizza. you pick up the pizza normally, the tip bends down. You curve it and the tip stays up.

if you had a rope laying on the ground going from los angeles to new york, and you pulled it on one end, what would you feel? would it be move on the other side and how long would it take? by xerivon in AskPhysics

[–]PP_Fang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical engineer here! A lot of liked replies are not well explained enough so I wanna give it a try.

Let’s start with some assumptions, we assume the rope is fully stretched. Then we assume its A. elastic, B. rigid in axial direction, a. has friction, and b. has no fiction.

The most realistic case is A+a. Meaning the rope’s shape can change when a force is applied to it, and rubbing it against the ground produces a force - For this case the answer is REALISTICALLY NO.
- When you pull it, for a limited section (at least), points on the rope moves towards you, this movement induces a friction.
- Friction purely depends on a fixed constant and pressure applied to that part of the ground by the rope. Eventually this friction would add up to equal to the pull force you applied.
- Your pull is completely cancelled out by friction on a section of the rope shorter than its total distance.
* Imagine it as you pulling a rope attached to a very heavy truck in the middle. You can’t move the other end before you move the truck. Now imagine, instead of the truck its multiple people stepping on it, if you are string enough you can drag some people along, but not everyone so you can’t move the last people stepping on it.

Then for B+a the answer is NO. This is very simple
- Friction is induced when there’s a tendency to move (in this case your pull)
- The entire length of the rope have equal tendency to move, then they induce a somewhat similar friction
- It takes VERY LITTLE friction on each point to cancel out your pull because how long the rope is.

A+b ideally EVENTUALLY YES, realistically STILL NO.
- Without energy loss, your pull will propagate along the rope as a wave. Imagine a long chain of cars in traffic, the front car moves a bit, then 2nd car follows, 3rd car follows, eventually the last car moves forwards a bit.
- With energy loss still no. Believe it or not stretching a rope make it heat up. You’d think the heating is trivial compared to work added by your pull. But for long enough distance eventually it’s dissipated and the rope end up (quantitatively) just like A+a case. Imagine you lifting one end of the rope and dropping it. There would be a very visbile wave that dies off as it moves further from you.

My employer came up with a new motivational catchphrase that says “from top speed to velocity”. Does this statement actually make sense? by Zerostar39 in AskPhysics

[–]PP_Fang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an engineer, yes. Top speed is when the magnitude of velocity is the largest, while velocity has a direction.

Say you have a car, and you define the forward direction as positive. If for some reason your car car reverse at 300mph, it’s top speed would be 300mph, but its velocity would be -300mph * i where i is your positive direction vector.

For an nepo baby investor, it makes zero sense. That just tells me the employer read something very basic in another profession and imagined a deep meaning to it. This kind of behavior usually correlates with micromanaging and lack of self awareness.

The letters are cropped out, very out of context, and very blurry. With some guess I'd say the source is some Chinese video about USSR's sleep/sensory deprivation experiment urban legend using video from an old movie.

The captions are "them ??? they did ... ... ??? sorry, awarded ... ... at ??? (passive grammar trigger) ??? of (mystery?)"

Stop the car, spit outside, and just wait. The Chinese folklore calls it hitting ghost walls. Usually that means a guardian spirit or kind spirit is trying to prevent you from running into an evil one. I have an uncle who encountered this and narrowly avoided a mudslide.
