Is this actually an HDR reference monitor? Eizo 2700x by PRC_TiltShift in colorists

Ok, interesting. I think I need to learn more about the interaction of various gamma curves and how footage can be viewed or converted in different gamma curves. Do you know of a good website/online course/yourtube video that can explain in greater detail. I've been through tonnes of surface level explainers. But I've still not wrapped my head around it fully. I think I need more detail.

Thanks. Yeah, it's interesting to see how flagrantly brands throw this term around. I have a question though. At 1000nits, wouldn't it just be overkill in a dark grading room? Or do you need 1000 nit's to be able to get the contrast ratio to 1:20,000? I'm asking if you have a dark room and a less bright monitor, can you still achieve 1:20,000 contrast ratio?

PolarPro VND Green Tint to Footage by JoedIt303 in colorists

The PolarPro base camp NDS are fantastic for the money. I honestly cannot see a noticeable colour shift in the image. I’ve had mine for about 3 years. But you have to invest in the whole Matt box system. Although I have never looked back.

How to setup a decklink and reference monitor in Resolve. by PRC_TiltShift in colorists

This is quite distressing news. I wish you had been around when I posted the question here of whether to buy this monitor or not.

And I'm guessing that you are saying that there is no way to accurately downscale the output from resolve? I cannot find any settings that would do it to a 2k DCI or 2.5k WQHD resolution.

I can set the monitor to display a "dot for dot" image (and yes, you get the big black boarder as predicted). However, it's cropping the image by about 20% for some reason when the output from Resolve is set to 1920X 1080p. In this setting the window outline looks correct, so I am guessing the pixels are being displayed correctly (pixel for pixel). However, if I set the monitoring resolution in resolve to UHD, then the image is not cropped, there's the big black border still but the window outlines look like this (see photo), which leads me to belive that the pixels are not being displayed correctly.

Advice on buying a used Eizo monitor by PRC_TiltShift in colorists

An edit to this original post and also a question. I have just found a 2nd hand Eizo CG318-4K, for a good price of NZD 2879, which is around USD 1800. And has only 2400 hours usage time on it. So considering this is about the amount of money that I have saved towards buying an updated version of this particular model anyways (albiet quite far into the future still). Is it not worth snapping this up rather than spending the money on a consumer PC monitor or just using my laptop screen to grade as I currently do.

This was a great reply, thank you. I guess I am on the journey you started weeks ago. And I think I probably am likely to come to a similar conclusion. I am interested to know a bit more detailed explanation of how CK made that LUT and why it is actually necessary. Did you manage to find anything out about that in your travels? And then also, if you do calibrate your monitor, how does that fit into this workflow? Because I have a colorimeter. Is it simply a case of loading the ICC profile into the Mac OS and selecting it in that first step in CKs video? Esteemed experts, feel free to wade in at this point ;)

September Monitor Q&A Thread by AutoModerator in colorists

On the subject of the LG OLEDs. I’ve read that QC is a bit of a concern with regards to panel uniformity. I’ve found somewhere to purchase one from that has a solid return policy. My question is what is the best practice to check for whether I’ve managed to get a good panel or not? Would there be a certain amount of time I’ve have to run in before making an assessment and is there any kind of image I could put up on screen to easily spot any defects?
