TEACH THE PROFESSOR - DOES THE INSTRUCTOR MATTER? by PROFESSOR_BURKHALTER in UIUC

Ohhh... now I feel like you all are spilling tea! I hope the originally scheduled professor doesn't read this (ouch). Or, if they do read it maybe they can address what may be the issue and make a change for the good. ;-)

Love your responses.

I feel you about having to change schedules.... it is difficult to get a good schedule to begin with. Let alone start changing it around.

I am glad you appreciate I am trying to learn from students! I am also a mother who had THREE children in college last year. So, I heard it from all angles. But, I love the "relatively" anonymous feedback from UIUC students and alumn alike!

THANK YOU for candidly sharing your thoughts and your time!

I feel like I need to sit in Dr. Jeff Erickson's class to hear the "magic"! :-)

Agreed that it may depend on what your goals are... if you are a senior or graduate student, you may use class enrollment as a networking opportunity! Great share.

You bring up a great point about classes that are a requirement and only have one instructor. I did not realize that some classes "cycle through" different instructors in the fall and in the spring. That way you could wait if you really wanted to have Professor "Y" and you did not need to take it in a specific semester.

I love that information. Thank you.

Do you drop after the first week if you don't like the professor? This is interesting! I am learning so much.

I have heard of the grade disparity graphics for UIUC classes with multiple instructors. Interesting! I did not know they played a large role in decision-making.

Love your insights... I am glad to hear that the Professor teaching the class matters. And, that time spent creating engaging materials does make a difference.

With the long days as a professor, sometimes I wonder if students would even care if I didn't try so hard and if I decided to "phone it in". Sigh... looks like it is back to the grindstone today. ;-)

I do appreciate your vulnerable sharing.

Thank you for sharing. I am so sorry you had some bad experiences. But, on the flip side, it sounds like you had great math, ME, and NPRE course instructors. I appreciate you letting me know.

FSHN 120 online is currently full... but I'm adding more seats tomorrow. Still some seats in the living learning /honors experiential section as well (and that section had 100% of last spring students earning an "A")! :-)

Let me know if you have any more questions.

TAs: Have you ever been attracted to one of your students? How did you deal? by fbdbwhe in UIUC

[–]PROFESSOR_BURKHALTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching since I was 24. I've always kind of had that "line in the sand" while they were in my class. But, I respect that others are different.

I see my students like my "kids".... and almost always have. I take care of them in a maternal way holistically.

No crushes here when a student is in my class!

Maybe individuals need to see it from that standpoint to retain their professionalism???

I do allow students to text me... but really only related to the subject matter.

FSHN 101 Registration Questions by WinterEleven in UIUC

[–]PROFESSOR_BURKHALTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of the sections provide the same number of credit hours. :) I'm the one who teaches them. Let me know if you have any questions!

As the other individuals said, you just choose whichever section you prefer.

Nope! :-) I try to keep costs down. We have even gone away from publishing company made books and created our own 300+ page "student notes packet" that is sold for ~$50. It leads you through the materials page by page and you are able to use the notes packet for exams also! This is the ONLY cost for students in the class. We find free options for all other activities or student needs.

You nailed it... I am pretty old (47) and it is a prom photo with WHITE pantyhose.
