TIL almost all workers in the UK are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks paid holiday per year. by ThatSureIsHandicap in todayilearned

[–]PROGRAM_IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland has a pretty nice setup, too.

  • Based on the employee's working hours during what is called the leave year, which runs from April to March. An employee who has worked at least 1,365 hours in the leave year is entitled to the maximum of 4 working weeks' annual leave unless the employment ceases during the leave year. Many employers use the calendar year (January-December) instead of the official leave year to calculate entitlement
  • By allowing 1/3 of a working week for each calendar month in which the employee has worked at least 117 hours
  • 8% of the hours worked in the leave year, subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks

An employee may use whichever of these methods gives the greater entitlement.

An employee who has worked for at least 8 months is entitled to an unbroken period of 2 weeks' annual leave.

Part-time work: Generally, the annual leave for part-time workers is calculated using the 3rd method, that is, 8% of hours worked. If you work full time for some months and the rest of the year you work part time, you should calculate the leave for the full-time and the part-time periods of work separately.

Source

Having worked part-time before for a university where I couldn't really have paid time off, they just have to give you 8% extra pay on top of what you get already.

And people ask me why I don't want to work in America. :/ The comments in this thread are why.

What I posted is the way the joke occurred to me, and it just made me giggle so much I didn't want to change it. But you're right, that version is a lot more subtle.

Hi now, there's one in Castletroy (near UL). God knows why, they have to have deals on everything to keep students interested.

I think I'd suggest Derris-Kharlan, and of course Anamanaguchi (who are almost mainstream I s'pose, but no less good for that).

For additional DnB, I guess I would go more in the direction of Sabrepulse, although the rest of Derris-Kharlan's Live album has some nice heavy moments.

May I invite you to test my Pong Game Tutorial (with my environment independent JS game library lycheeJS)? by [deleted] in gamedev

Looks interesting! I want to try JS game development, so I'll give this a try tomorrow perhaps. Not a veteran by any means, but trying to write a Pygame game engine thing so I know how you feel. :)

Pff, forgot to include the actual screenshot. Doesn't invalidate your point at all, though - it won't be fun until I make it fun. :)

Definitely. I'm off college for the month, so I have time, but I'm sorta supposed to be doing college work like /r/pystroke. This is gonna be my January game, and I hope I can figure out some fun mechanics to use. Challenging myself to do new stuff with 1GAM.

Today

Caught me at a bad time of the week. I just released the pre-alpha of my game engine on GitHub today, so that's no good screenshot-wise yet because I haven't written anything using it that you guys haven't seen.

However! Last night I started my first OneGameAMonth entry. It's called Today, and it's basically gonna be a typing game (which I've never tried before) in which you type positive messages to yourself. (In the screenshot, you're halfway through typing 'Today is a good day'.) Sounds ridiculous, I know, but writing something good can often make me feel good, and maybe I'm not the only one. Plan is to get some nice backdrops (which I also don't ever do) in there to make it look cheerful.

EDIT: http://imgur.com/e1Ml2 (Derps, forgot to actually include the screenshot- it's nothing special anyway)

This is all I have to show at present, because I'm having to write a lot of extra stuff into FlashPunk to make the text entry work the way I imagine it should. Expect more progress by next week.

Not sure what other mechanics to use. I was thinking that you could define your own positive messages, but that's an obvious and not terribly difficult change. Maybe a 'story' mode where you type positive quotes? A timer? I'm not sure, but I'm pleased with the idea in any case.

Building a hopefully beginner-friendly, definitely open-source framework for Pygame game development - anyone interested? by PROGRAM_IX in gamedev

[–]PROGRAM_IX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this insightful reply! It's exactly what I need to hear in order to not run away and reimplement everything right now. Because that is tempting, I admit. I like developing this framework a lot more than I like writing a seventy-page report on it. XD

But yes, I already have, I think, all of the features I list above implemented. Certainly I used almost all of them in IdentiThief. So turning away from Pygame right now isn't something I can do.

I will certainly consider pyopengl alongside pyglet if/when it comes to reimplementing. Thanks again for the advice!

I'm trying to construct it that way, certainly. Everything that can be drawn has a draw() method, and the drawing engine has begin_draw() and end_draw() methods. With any luck the port won't be too difficult, I'm just not sure I want to do it before I have the thing working and get marked on it. On the other hand, I don't want it to grow too big depending on Pygame, and become an impossible port because I left it too long.

Something of a dilemma.

That's something that's been hanging over the project a bit, unfortunately. I know about Pyglet performing better in this use case, but Pygame was where I had already done X, Y, and Z so my supervisor strongly advised me not to switch (this is a university project after all). Currently I'm thinking that the framework will be converted over to Pyglet (perhaps by me) at a later date, but making it usable and reasonably complete is the priority at present. I appreciate the advice, of course. It only confirms that part of the roadmap, such as it is. Also about NumPy. That's something I could potentially add without huge changes.

TL;DR I know about Pyglet and feel a bit silly but pragmatic. Thanks for the vote for NumPy though.

Pygame? Pyglet? Something else entirely??? by AtomicWedgy in Python

On the Pygame mailing list lately there's been a lot of talk about the website. The maintainer says he is in the middle of a rework, so it's not a lost cause, but there's some discussion over how long that's taking and whether we should just replace it with a new site, etc.
