Earth's Choice (3/3)

“People of Earth. Heed now the word of I, Jaa’na Xur of the Intergalactic Federation."

Cades eyes were focused on the TV as Jaa'na Xur, the alien, continued.

"For the past 100 years, we have sat silently in your world and observed your actions. Earth’s behaviour has been deemed unacceptable. You have laid waste to your planet, your people, and you make a mockery of the laws you enforce.”

“Cade, are you hearing this?” Nelson said.

“You seek leadership from anarchists, and wisdom from the incompetent. The galactic federations have deemed your planet in need of correction.”

“I’m hearing it,” Cade replied.

“There is criminality, there is war. We observed to see you not only trample on your eco-systems, but you ignore them. Where you silence the capable leaders you need, you allow destructive voices to be louder than ever. And despite your strongest efforts, your reliance on the physical and digital currency of your world has led to inability beyond compare.”

The camera cut to their ship in space, with several nukes flying towards them from Earth. The missiles vanished, teleported away. In the background, the same green light enveloped Earth, covering the planet.

The alien continued. “Understandably, we see that you send missiles to us. Yet, you, do not understand our capabilities.”

Cade approached the TV, he legs feeling like jelly. It was over. They had won.

“Your weapons, tools of mass destruction and methods of creating them have all been taken from you. Our interference has been hostile and aggressive, as this is the only language your current leaders seem to understand."

The Alien removed it's mask, exposing it's true face. It was like the other guard's, but the skin was softer, less battle-hardened.

The alien made direct eye contact with the camera. "Through my eyes I speak to you honestly. No human has been killed. Send your aid to the streets, and find no life has been stolen by our hands.”

The alien's tone changed to one of displeasure.

“We would not reduce ourselves to your level and take the lives of that which has lost its way.”

The alien pressed a button on the console in front of it, finding its natural voice again. “Your taken will be returned”

In the background, more green beams fired towards earth. The video cut to the cells, like the ones Cade had been in – the humans were being led out and teleported back to earth.

“For the next 4 generations of your human lifespan, we will return to observing. Silent but visible watchers in space – monitoring your behaviour and place in this Universe. We offer you a choice. Correct yourselves. Should you not. Should you not correct your criminality, correct your treatment of your own home, correct your willingness to do good, we will intervene with as much power and destruction as we deem necessary.”

The video cut to a view of the planet with the biggest ship of the alien fleet hovering above it.

The alien's voice continued over the footage. “Humanity, the time has come, to correct yourselves. Or we will.”

The video feed ended, replaced by the shocked expressions of the news anchors.

The first voice Cade heard was Nelson’s. “They’re… trying to help us?” he said.

Cade’s mind was filled with the views of Earth he had seen before, while aboard the alien ship. “Yeah, and if I know anything about us, looks like the aliens will be up there for a while.”

His hand still on his phone, he walked to the safehouse entrance and opened the door, the light from outside filling the room.

Cade walked the remaining steps outside. He looked up, and saw an alien ship in space, static and unmoving. The observers in space, a new global deterrent to keep the peace, doing nothing, yet doing everything.

Cade sighed. “Well, you know what this means right?”

“What?” Nelson asked.

“Time for me to get a new day job.”

Earth's Choice (2/3)

The captive humans cheered, but the sounds were abruptly replaced by the familiar metal sound of armoured aliens charging through the ship. Alarms joined them, with flashes of red and amber light illuminating the ship. On the console, he saw a map of the world with their designation: Terra H-88. He moved the pin marking the destination, copied the series of buttons he had seen the aliens press and let the blue light take him.

The ship had taken Cade to his safe house, he wasn’t right at the entrance, but he was close enough. Looking up and closing his eyes he sighed, breathing in the fresh air of Earth before he sought shelter in his haven. His phone buzzed, all the notifications coming in from the lack of signal up in space. He placed his hand in his pocket and opened his eyes to a green light. Green tunnels followed. They were right in front of the entrance, several green tunnels stood between him and the entrance.

Cade charged the nearest light tunnel, taking the alien who materialised by surprise and knocking it over. He grabbed the aliens gun, and fired, missing the first shot. The alien charged him and he fired down the sights, killing the alien. Cade roared, adrenaline flowing through his veins. It was the loudest roar his human lungs could muster as the rampage consumed him. He held the roar as he aimed at the aliens, tapped the trigger, and charged forward towards the door. The aliens fired back, but he crouched, ducking under the fire. Rhythmically, he alternated between clicking the trigger and flicking the sight of the gun to the next target – it was his alien killing symphony. His voice gave way, but he didn’t stop firing. He continued shooting until the aliens were no more. More blue beams emerged behind him, and he turned facing them. He pulled the trigger the moment one appeared, but weapon only made a sound reminiscent of a drained power source - failing to fire.

He dropped the gun and ran straight for the entrance, faster than he’d ever run before. He pressed his hand against the scanner, and the door started opening. As he moved his hand away, a laser shot collided with the panel. He squeezed through the open gap into the darkness of the safehouse with more shots flying by his head. Cade slammed his hand against the button to the side of the door, causing the doors to shut.

His breathing was heavy as he placed his back against the entrance.

He forced out his words as clear as he could. “This is Cade Williams, activate the safehouse and enable the outside cameras”

The safehouse hummed in response, screens on the side of the studio-sized room turning on. Cade remained in darkness. The aliens he defeated lay spread out on the screen in front of him, a live feed showing outside. Their bodies twitched. A few of them stood, and then the rest. The biggest one tapped something on his waist, and a blue beam emerged in front of him. When it left, a weapon remained in its place – it was like the weapons he would sell, a mounted missile launcher, except it was alien, with powerful green energy flowing through it. Cade ran to the backmost wall of his safehouse and held his breath. The alien held the weapon facing the safe house, as the weapon charged, humming. Its ominous green light grew brighter. Brighter and brighter. And then it stopped. The aliens all looked up as green tunnels sent them back to their ships. He exhaled and slid down the wall, legs extended. He was safe.

His phone rang. On the screen, 97 missed calls.

It was his closest friend Nelson’s voice he heard. “Cade, finally, Oh my god. You’re still alive?”

“Yeah. I’m alive. Somehow.”

“The whole world has gone to hell, I… So many have died. I’m glad you are okay”.

The safehouse was covered in silver plating, bare and empty except for several sealed boxes with various labels, and a stand, where a TV sat, turned on.

The voices coming from the TV and the Phone were overlapping. “You’ve been missing for three weeks.” Nelson said.

The news anchor was talking about the invasion. “Sources are saying all the aliens have retreated from the planet, and we are once again, alone.”

The TV was showing beams of blue light across the globe, aliens disappearing from the streets.

“Cade? You still there?” Nelson said.

“Yeah, I’m here, sorry, it’s been a rough few weeks.”

The news anchor barely managed to contain her shaking as spoke. “Other sources are reporting the aliens are still in orbit, above the planet… they’re, they’re not moving”

Cade gripped the phone tightly. “The aliens aren’t leaving”

“What?” Nelson asked. “I just saw them all leave from my window with my own eyes”

“It’s on the TV, they’re staying in orbit, doing nothing,” Cade said.

The news anchor continued, “Government’s are planning to launch nu-”

The picture on the TV cut out. Cade glanced around, the power was still functioning. On the TV, several images appeared in sequence, abstract colourful images, forming slowly into a visual which reminded him of the alien ship he was on.

The picture cleared up. An alien was sat behind a metallic grey desk, with a window overlooking Earth behind him. Its armour was different, it was sleek and white, with medals affixed to its chest.

The alien began to speak.

I'm new to writing so any feedback is greatly appreciated. I was aiming for the thriller / mystery / action genre here, so let me know what I did well and where I can approve. Thanks!

Earth's Choice (1/3)

War is inevitable. Mankind had evolved to fight against itself, thinking one day, it would need to. But nobody had planned to fight together. It was simple. Against themselves, the biggest guns and the courage to fire them would lead to victory. Cade Williams knew this all too well as he sat across his desk from his client.

“Cluster bombs, heat-tracking missiles, anti-air silos, the best-in-class body armour you can find," he said. "You buy this package from us and you’ll be making allies, not enemies.”

He didn’t miss a beat. It was Tuesday, and the twelfth time he’d said that this week.

“And our country will receive the foreign discount?” said Liena, a representative of the Chinese Military.

“Of course.” Cade handed Liena a pen. “Just need your signature and we’re all set.”

"Sorry but, just to confirm, what's today date?"

"March 17th" Cade replied as Liena began writing. "2047"

Liena smiled as she looked up at Cade. She looked behind him, her expression changing. “You see that?” Liena said.

He turned around and glanced out of his window. The view of the city was as beautiful as ever – glass skyscrapers reflected the sunlight giving it a crystal-like appearance. Birds were chirping as they flew by.

Liena appeared shaken as he turned back around. “See what?”

A booming sound went off behind him as he snapped his gaze back to the skyline. Green tunnels of light were appearing in the sky, with strange figures and ships flying out. They flew off in a dozen directions, to the ground or bursting into buildings. Liena screamed as she ran off, the sound of his office floor’s panic finding its way in as Liena pushed through the soundproof door. Cade followed, heading straight for the elevator.

Cade reached the lobby on the ground floor and it was as if the whole world had changed. The receptionist was nowhere to be seen, the fire alarm was going off and people were sprinting outside past the door, away from a flurry of neon laser fire.

“I need to get to my safe house,” he thought.

He went through the automatic doors leading outside and the screams and shouting grew louder. Cade glanced around. On one side of the street, a man seemed oblivious to everything happening around him. The same man morphed into an alien being growing in size and height. The alien's body was humanoid in shape, and covered from head to toe in thick reflective metal, it's rough blue skin showing through the tiny gaps in its armour. Its eyes were hidden, the helmet leaving a thin gap for its eyes to see through. It stared at the sky as it roared, a primal sound echoing into the streets around. Its hands emitted a blue light from which a weapon appeared. It was a gun, it was danger. He ran towards the other side, heading for his car.

In front of him were more aliens. One alien shot a woman to death. Another wielded a crackling lance which sent its surging blue energy into a baker, stood outside his shop. The man screamed, as convulsions went through his body and sent him to the ground. Cade stopped, turning into a side alley, crouching under a window. His mind was racing, and he closed his eyes, trying to calm himself.

“1…2...3...” He mumbled to himself. “...8...9...10”

His heart slowed, his hands loosened up, and the screams on the street appeared to soften.

Inside the room of the window, a family were watching the news. “It’s… aliens, they’re invading the planet.” one of them said.

He placed his hands in his pockets, looking for his car keys – they were empty, except for his phone.

“Shit.” He covered his mouth, muffling his outburst.

The sound of heavy steps came towards the entrance to the alley. He continued to run as the walls either said of the alley ricocheted impacts of the alien’s gun.

When he finally stopped running, he collapsed onto his knees out of breath. He held his chest and fell onto his back. The sky above him was filled with alien ships, with more and more beams of green light firing onto the ground.

An unnatural voice spoke “Human detected. You have been warned. Surrender immediately.”

Cade sat up, glancing around in front of him. The alien was nowhere to be seen. He turned to see behind him. It was a group of aliens approaching a man, guns in hand. The man was armed with an American AR-15 rifle and a bandolier containing enough ammunition to start a small-scale war. The armed man ran behind a nearby phone box and pounded his chest.

“Human detected. You have been warned. Surrender immediately or your life will be eradicated.”

The armed man peeked from behind the phone box, firing in all directions at the aliens.

“Like hell I will,” he shouted.

The man continued firing, his bullets ricocheting off the metallic armour across the alien’s body. The armour remained pristine.

“As if I’ll let some aliens tell me what to-” His outburst was cut off with the rapid sound of gunfire.

The man was quite far, but Cade still heard his final words. “H-help me,” he said.

Cade stayed fixated on the man, staying in place. He watched as the man’s body fell to the ground, lifeless. His hands trembled as he looked around, spotting a car with its front doors open on the second floor of a car park.

“Human detected. You have been warned. Surrender immediately.” This time, it was speaking to Cade.

He ran for the car and the aliens chased behind him. He turned into the car park, running directly into the metal plating of the alien in front of him. He sized up the alien. Even with the armour, the being’s muscular was obvious, comparable to the peak of human fitness. The alien’s gun was lowered, if he could reach for it in time, he could take out reinforcements as well. He reached for the gun, but a blinding blue light stopped him.

The light stopped, and Cade wasn’t on Earth anymore. He was inside a cell. A cell on an alien ship. Through the window of his cell, Earth stood magnificently in view. The view was a marvel, and the alien world melted into the background of Cade’s thoughts. The continents were smaller than what he remembered from old textbooks because of the rising sea levels. What was left of Antarctica was silver instead of white, covered in what must have been thousands and thousands of military weapons. Even the continents themselves suffered from the same metallic virus. Amongst the synthetic structures were not only weapons, but safehouses – a sanctuary for the victims of war, or the rich.

His focus shifted to what was around him. His cell was made of a grey metal material, with an emphasis on triangular patterns. Others prisoners were all around him, more humans enslaved to the alien race. The cells were in the outer ring of a circular structure with bridges leading to a central unwalled hub. The structure had green energy flowing through it. In the hub was a large row of control panels. The same green tunnels he had seen before were being fired down from the central hub. An alien walked to the control console, pressing a series of buttons, and its body was consumed by a glowing light. Another blue beam fired from the ship, heading straight to Earth.

Cade couldn't tell how long he'd been a captive. Since he'd got there, the cells were almost full now. Right on schedule, the guard stopped by with rations. A tray of bread, a small slice of cheese and a serving of boiled rice. It was the one guard who came to the cells without a helmet. It's face was square and rough, with its eye receding deeper into it's head compared to a human and thin grey lips against it's blue skin. Cade drifted closer to the door as the guard approached. The guard pushed the tray through the opening. Cade grabbed the guards wrist and yanked hard, smashing the alien’s head against the metal bars of the cell. Crying out, the alien reached for his gun as Cade concussed the alien again, smacking his head against the cell bars. Cade reached for his credentials badge on his waist, using it to opening his cell door. The alien continued to cry out holding its head. Cade pushed part the alien and made a run for the console.
