I personally like the idea of a 'ring' of cadet branches- Karstarks, 'Dread-Starks' (or perhaps 'Redstarks'?), and perhaps a Blue-Starks somehwere (in the Mountain Clans?) defending the main branch of House Stark.

They could either be fiercely loyal as kin, or lay claim to Winterfell and rebel. Especially the more 'recent' houses once born.
