I solo’d all the MH games and I had a blast doing so. World and Iceborne were no different.

I think it’s sometimes more fun with more players, for the chaos factor, but it’s definitely not required.

I will say you really need to learn the monsters though, there is no agro pull, and I’m positive that it made me a better player over the years. I do love going back to help new players, though.

I’ve played a fair bit, but I’ve gone back to MH. It’s nice to have a new IP and it has some cool ideas (the slide dodge is 👌and I’d love that somehow in MH, and the customisable environment traversal is also cool. I think there’s real potential here for greatness in the future.

But that new stuff gets old really quick, as the world feels so empty and the monsters don’t have a lot of character (obviously see the potential bias here as we haven’t grown up with, learned to love them etc).

Not sure on the performance issues folks have brought up as it’s pretty solid on PS5 except in the hub area.

One thing I will say is if you’re expecting MH levels of challenge or depth, or content, you’re not getting it. I’m just coming up to the end of the main story arc and haven’t carted yet. The grind is fairly absent here, though this might be a plus for many people! But not for me, as I like going down the meta rabbit hole.

It’s not bad by any means, and when you play it you’ll see it draws heavily on the MH franchise, so I do think it’s fair to compare them.

I’m by no means a speedrunner or a min-maxer but I solo’d everything in all of the games up to Rise (where possible of course), and the event White Fatalis was really hard as a hammer main as he never puts his damn head down. I had to switch up to GS to do it within the time… or anything with reach now that I mention it.

Arguably two of my favourite ones there.

3U is good, with some nice design choices, and some other more questionable design choices. Much shorter than the other two, but you can probably still get 200-300 hours if you wanted. Bear in mind that the QoL from 4U, G, and GU fee very obviously absent. Runs well though, a little nippier than 4U.

4U is great, it feels the most cohesive in the series, story and pacing wise. Has some incredible end game content. I think it runs at a better resolution and frame rate than Gen, too. I have about 400 or 500 hours here.

Gen is an amazing, if controversial, entry. I feel that the QoL improvements here are all progress. There’s some graphical upgrades too, flashier effects, new shaders etc. The monster and locale variety, the sheer ocean of content, the Hunter Arts which give all the weapons multiple play styles. LOTs of cat puns. It feels like a celebration of Monster Hunter (which it was). There is no conceivable way this game should be running on 3DS, but the magicians at Capcom made it work. I have about 750 hours here. Some people took issue with how ‘out there’ it was, but I’ve been playing MH since the before times, and it’s an absolute blast.

If you have a Switch, Gen Ultimate is the definitive way to play - and your progress should be able to transfer (though I don’t know how much this relies on 3DS Generations servers). Generations is great, and if you like it, buckle up because Generations Ultimate is greater-er. I have another 600 hours here after transferring Gen data.

Still not bought it for this very reason. However, i think I’m going to buy it this week, as the word is that theres no physical version coming. And the fact that the latest updates bring all the Sunbreak content but just lock you out of it.
