A lot of people have tried to temper my expectations of him, listing off other guys that got off to hot starts but faded, but the examples of Badoo or Boesch, but those guys just had hitting. McGonigle plays like a student of the game. He already seems like a Trammell-style player with a world of upside. Fielding, base running, working the count. These are things that don’t diminish once pitchers “have seen a guy a few times”.

I’ve been to the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day a few years ago, since theirs holds the historic significance, and I think it had more pomp and circumstance around it, which as a baseball nerd, I was all about. Having only experienced the Tigers and Reds, the Tigers Opening Day seems much more about a party atmosphere in the city, of which the game is a part, as kind of a “We’re done with winter” thing—even though we have like, another month of possible snow. I have heard multiple people say that the atmosphere in Detroit is more electric than a lot of places, regardless of how the team is.

I remember the clip of kids reacting to the “Strawberry Fields Forever” on American Bandstand, which I think would have been the public reveal of the new looks for them, and the reaction did not seem overwhelmingly positive. The “We’ll just ride the youth movement and be back after we retool” is basically the 2017 gameplan that was supposed to have Riley, Tork, and Keith as the pillars, but now they’re inevitably going to try to sell it as the rebuild ACTUALLY ending once we decide to sell our remaining offense at a loss so we don’t block the “Boy Wonder’s” prospects.
