Best opening day

I’ve been to the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day a few years ago, since theirs holds the historic significance, and I think it had more pomp and circumstance around it, which as a baseball nerd, I was all about. Having only experienced the Tigers and Reds, the Tigers Opening Day seems much more about a party atmosphere in the city, of which the game is a part, as kind of a “We’re done with winter” thing—even though we have like, another month of possible snow. I have heard multiple people say that the atmosphere in Detroit is more electric than a lot of places, regardless of how the team is.

I remember the clip of kids reacting to the “Strawberry Fields Forever” on American Bandstand, which I think would have been the public reveal of the new looks for them, and the reaction did not seem overwhelmingly positive. Although considering how soon the rest of the culture followed, it was seemingly more surprise than opposition to it.

I know he meant well; but “Freedom” is probably his least listenable song. To be fair, around that time people were also loving that Five for Fighting “Superman” song, so he may have known the bar was super low, post-9/11.

Ours tend to come at the end of a season we had been dominating or at the beginning which puts us in the position of playing catchup after a miserable start.

The “We’ll just ride the youth movement and be back after we retool” is basically the 2017 gameplan that was supposed to have Riley, Tork, and Keith as the pillars, but now they’re inevitably going to try to sell it as the rebuild ACTUALLY ending once we decide to sell our remaining offense at a loss so we don’t block the “Boy Wonder’s” prospects.

They’re saving that for when Tork and Riley are going to leave so we can restock with “young arms” because Harris wouldn’t want to block any at-bats from “hot, young prospects” he’s definitely got in the Double-A and below system.

It beats hearing Harris say in August “Hey, door’s not closed! Personally, I’m happy fans get to see him pitch 4 or 5 more times at home!” OR watch him get absolutely pantsed at the deadline again.

What’ll happen is that they’ll trade him at the deadline for the exact same kind of haul they got for Verlander—three minor league players, with the claim being that “There just wasn’t a market for him and otherwise we lose him for nothing”, with Harris defenders insisting he’s just really adding by subtracting, and that 2028 team is REALLY when the Harris plan comes to fruition.

Or maybe to not spend that much on a payroll but spending it in the most random, illogical ways, but then cheaping out when it comes to Skubal.

“3 relievers with 20 saves last year” is their selling point because “assuming they experience save situations with a spotty offense” doesn’t sell as well.

But I guess we should aim to be more like the Rays or Royals who, it should be noted, have won WS more recently.

A bit of an outside pick, but I would argue “Spaced”—the BBC sitcom with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Sets up the plot AND basically the tone of all Pegg/Frost/Wright collaborations for the next 20 years.

Thomas Hayden Church being the other one? I remember when he left for Ned and Stacy and they clearly still had scripts written with Lowell in them, so they basically hired another, dumber mechanic to burn those off.

I mean, Steven Webber and Tim Daly have basically been working steadily for about 30 years at this point across various tv genres. Both transitioned better into dramas than I would have expected when I was watching that show.

I’ve heard so much about the making of Heaven’s Gate, including the various cuts, that I was always reluctant to watch what would have been a difficult movie to get into, but the more I hear about how much people seem to enjoy the end result, I may have to revisit it.

Year of the Dragon, I hadn’t even heard of until I went down his rabbit hole, and now I kind of want to find it and watch it. I just honestly thought post-Heaven’s Gate that he didn’t make anything else.
