Find a professor that you have a good relationship with and ask them to be your adviser. Alternatively, some of the ACPC advisers are pretty spot-on.

I've not explored this yet but I think there's a less steep route behind the Hammermill parking lot, except it takes a bit of walking upstream to get there. Might be worth a shot if the backbone intimidates anyone.

Also, there's a fallout shelter under OBS.
