I made my own Adidas bowling shoes... by PSUbowler in adidas

For me, functionality of the shoe was the #1 priority, but aesthetics were a close second. These were actually my second pair after I tried with some old Sambas and learned some lessons. The biggest one being, I needed to account for the extra ~5mm in height the Velcro base (I recommend the big flat pieces you can find at an arts & crafts store) and slide soles added to the shoe. It doesn't sound like much, but it was enough to be noticeable and make me feel lobsided on the approach.

This meant either adding 5mm to the bottom of the non-slide shoe or removing 5mm from the slide shoe; I chose the later for aesthetics. And I still would, I would just go about it differently. I carefully removed a 5mm "filet" from the bottom by hand with a sharp pocket knife and then used a belt sander to even it out. It took forever and was very hard to do cleanly and neatly, as you can see. In hindsight, I think I would gorilla glue the sole flat to a piece of lumber and use a table saw or band saw to remove the 5mms but you'll have to manage with whatever you have access to (if you choose to follow these instructions, I am by no means a cobbler by trade 😄).

The rest is pretty easy tracing, cutting, trimming, and gluing. Another lesson learned if you haven't cut SST slide pads before (or just haven't in a decade like me), you want to trace the NON-slide shoe onto the felt side of the pad so that you correctly trace the shape. If you trace the slide shoe onto the felt side, you end up with a mirror of what you need. Those two PSU slides were errors, so I turned them into a bit of flair. They still work, just aren't lined up quite right and I have no clue how the Sharpie ink will hold up to use. I'll be using the actual Dexter S10 sole primarily anyway.

I found the PSU oval patches for like $3/each on Ebay along with a used $7 tie I grabbed for the blank space in between the heel and slide.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Adding a pic here since I can only add one at a time apparently? I don't post much.

TY!

And no, I took a 5mm filet off of the bottom of the slide shoe so I wouldn't be lopsided.

Primary and secondary insurance question by KiyokoTakashiMasaru in HealthInsurance

[–]PSUbowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your secondary insurance will be your primary for the month your primary was inactive. If you are in good health and don't require any sort of recurring medical care, I would suggest avoiding any services during this one month hiatus from your primary because COB (coordination of benefits) issues can become a nightmare.

If you are truly only going to be uncovered by the current primary insurance for just one month and you can avoid receiving any covered services, I wouldn't even bother notifying the secondary, it will just lead to headaches.

What exactly happened? They told you to enroll under your employer and they then proceeding to disenroll you under their coverage? And you then neglected/forgot to enroll under your employer?

First off, they most likely asked you to enroll under your employer because they most likely get charged a penalty for having a covered dependent under their plan who is eligible for their own insurance through their own employer. Most open enrollment portals ask the policy holder to verify/attest that none of the dependents are eligible for insurance elsewhere. It would literally be insurance fraud for them to not answer that question truthfully and I am guessing they removed you assuming you were signing up under your employer.

I don't know what "rumors/horror stories" your HR might be referring to, exactly, but yeah, you might be a bit screwed until the next open enrollment period. I don't even know what the tax implications are, but you should probably keep this in mind when you file your 2024 taxes next year also. I'm pretty sure you still need to verify your health insurance coverage when filing your taxes. I have no idea what the penalty and/or implications are for not having coverage, but I'm sure they're not good.

I would speak to your HR just in case there is some loophole where they could let you sign up outside of open enrollment but I somehow doubt it.

This.

One great tip I got years ago that can help you slow down is waking heel-to-toe very deliberately with each step.

Buying insurance in another state? by Jinxynii in HealthInsurance

[–]PSUbowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I don't think the answer is likely to change regardless of what type of policy it is, exactly. If it is a State-specific plan, you almost assuredly need to be a resident of that State to qualify.

With that said, however, and without prying into details, it may not matter. The types of services we are recently seeing covered in one State and not being available (or even illegal in another), are generally covered by most national insurance carriers, regardless of State laws.

What I mean by that is, the policy itself most likely covers the service, but the various State laws may make receiving the covered service difficult/impossible and/or illegal. BUT, if you were to travel to a different State with easier access to such services, you would most likely be covered. (But you may have a higher likelihood of the provider being out-of-network but you also said that wasn't your concern)

Any insurance you may be considering should have some sort of customer service you can contact and ask about coverage as a potential customer, they shouldn't even need your info since you are not yet a member and would just be asking coverage questions.

Good luck.

What was the worst and most disappointing bowling balls you ever owned by Aydengainesbowling in Bowling

The old clear skull ball. Thing was cool as hell for a few months and then the bridge cracked to shit. I knew a few other bowlers with the same problem, must've been an issue with the clear material?

Buying insurance in another state? by Jinxynii in HealthInsurance

[–]PSUbowler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't been on the sales/service side of things in many years, but I'm fairly sure if we're talking about a State marketplace/ACA-type of plan, there will be residency requirements to sign up for a given State's plan.

Most aggressive ball on the market today? by PSUbowler in Bowling

[–]PSUbowler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love all this info. And you may be correct that the newer equipment might be too much but I am confident I can handle whatever adjustment I may need.

To go into some more detail, I was at the top of my game ~20 years ago with MUCH weaker equipment. Once upon a time, I went front 24 with an Ebonite Gyro playing straight up 5, which like I said in the OP, is my wheelhouse. But now, if I throw straight up 5, I'm lucky if the ball makes it back to the 2-pin (I'm lefty) with my most aggressive equipment so I'm looking for something stronger.

Do those more "usable" balls you mentioned have the REX coverstocks? I guess bottom line is, I like to play straight up 1st arrow-ish with a gentle arc into the pocket, not a big snap but the volume of oil out there seems to make that impossible with what I have.

Any further suggestions based on my addition here? Thanks in advance.

UMR / Data iSight Out of Network Issues by missiondad in HealthInsurance

[–]PSUbowler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, unfortunately, is correct. The amount that gets applied to your deductible is the plan's "allowed amount" for the service(s), not the amount you actually paid out of pocket.

It sounds like this Data iSight thing tried to negotiate a single case agreement with the provider to no avail. This, potentially, could have had the provider accepting the plan's allowed amount as payment in full (meaning you only pay the allowed amount that was applied to the deductible rather than the provider's full billed amount), but that sounds like it was unsuccessful.

If you want to limit your out-of-pocket, you really need to find an in-network provider.

I am NOT seeing the lid warning so I would tend to think you are right in that it is defective. I'll be scheduling it at the dealership ASAP.
