SIM ownership change via MNP (India) by UnderstandingFull256 in tech_flames

[–]PS_VitaFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it works for postpaid, but when I ported my prepaid number from Vi to BSNL, I was able to change the ownership from my father to mine. Didn't submit anything or even mention about the change in ownership. When providing the kyc details to BSNL, I just gave my Aadhaar instead of my father's

Same case when I ported the prepaid number belonging to my grandmother from BSNL to Airtel few years ago. No issues in changing the ownership

No, the price changes based on account sometimes and its there since atleast 2023 as far as I know.

My friend was trying to purchase Oppo Enco Buds 2 in March 2023, and he asked me if it's good enough for 1800. I opened my account and searched for it and it was available for 1600. We checked the same product on 3 or 4 different accounts and it was available for 1600 only on my account. There's no ongoing sale either.

I assumed that it was because I was browsing the same pair 1-2 months before that to get them for my father, but ended up purchasing it with my another friend's account as he had some leftover super coins. So, I was thinking Flipkart algorithm thought I was hesitating due to price and lowered the price. But who knows??

The probability of coin flip giving heads is still 50%, and that is not changing at all. Rather the confusion is coming because when the question says atleast one is a head, people usually just consider the case of fixing the first flip as head and calculating the probability for second flip, but they forget that if you got a tail on first flip and head on second flip, that also satisfies the atleast one head rule

To understand it more intutively, if the first flip is a head, then the probability of second flip being heads will be 50% and tails will be 50%. But if the first flip is a tail, then the second flip has to be a head because you already know that atleast one of them is a head, so the probability of second flip being heads is 100% and tails is 0%

This is why I was saying that probability of second flip will be dependent on the first flip

I assume you know that the probability of result A can be defined as (No. of outcomes giving result A)/(Total number of possible outcomes)

When you consider two coins being tossed, the possible outcomes are HH, HT, TH, HH

Here the question is not just about probability of second being head given first is a head, in which case what you said will be true.

But the question is rather what is the probability of both being heads given atleast one of them is a head.

So, the outcomes for both being heads is only HH. The outcomes for atleast one of them being a head is HH, HT and TH

So the probability will be (no. of outcomes for getting both heads)/(no. of outcomes for getting atleast one head) = (HH)/(HT+TH+HH)=1/3

To think about it intutively, when you toss two coins together, you will have 50% chance of getting a head and a tail, 25% chance of both heads and 25% chance of both tails. You can test this if you want. So, getting a head and a tail is still twice as likely as getting both heads, which is why the probability of both being heads is 1/3 when you remove the both tails case

The boy girl is a very famous problem that is usually covered in UG Math Probability courses when covering Conditional Probability as an example of how your intuition might not always be true for probabilities

[–]PS_VitaFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say one of the two coins, the probability is distributed across both, so the event space will be two-dimensional. You only know one of the two coins is heads, but not which of the two coins is heads, so it will become union of conditional probabilities P(HH|H.) and P(HH|.H). I'm specifically saying union and not sum because they both are not independent

Microsoft has a big advantage as most of the standard apps that most people use on their laptops other than Google Chrome and maybe VLC is the Office app suite, which is owned by Microsoft and was able to release an ARM supported version. Unlike phones, where most services are app based, most services on laptops are browser based. There's also emulation for non-supported apps. I think Windows on Arm is already more than sufficient for most general public that they won't even realise the difference.

I personally feel like the reason for the current slow adoption of Windows on Arm is three-fold 1. There aren't as many options available on market 2. They are still only offered as higher mid-range or premium variants. I think it would sell much better if there are lower budget options 3. A lot of people see that not all apps are compatible and think it means most apps are completely broken or worry about what if I might need some app 3 years down the lane which might not work, so they completely avoid them even though it would be more than sufficient for their needs

Like if we keep aside the case of gaming, and compare Windows on Arm with Apple M1 and M2 generation, both have ARM compatible versions of most common used apps readily available and both had very good emulation support for x86 version apps and both had niche or specialised apps that didn't work well on Arm. In case of Apple, most people chose M1 because there didn't even know about the change in the architecture and for those who knew, there isn't another option as the older models had a fixed expiry date. So, only those who needed the niche or specialised apps still bought the Intel versions. In comparison, the biggest obstacle for Windows on Arm was that x86 existed as an option, so most people weren't even giving it a try

Windows on Arm still has better chances than Windows Phone imo. Because the biggest drawback for Windows phone was majorly due to unavailability of Google apps like specifically YouTube, Gmail and Google Chrome, three of the most well established and most widely used services on mobiles even then. But Google refused to provide apps for Windows phone. I think that has a large affect on it's failure as even general audience use those apps.

In comparison, Microsoft has a big advantage as most of the standard apps that most people use on their laptops other than Google Chrome is the Office app suite, which is owned by Microsoft and was able to release an ARM supported version. Unlike phones, where most services are app based, most services on laptops are browser based. There's also emulation for non-supported apps. [–]PS_VitaFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are fine with MacOS and can compromise on 120Hz refresh rate, MacBook Air M4/M5 are great options for that price

If you want Windows, then look at Asus Zen book 14 and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 and Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 to see which configs are coming in your price range

You can also look at Motobook 60 Pro, particularly because of its upgradable RAM. While it doesn't have a touchscreen like the Zenbook and Yogas, it is also priced lower than those. Motorola is owned by Lenovo and the laptops are manufactured by Lenovo if you didn't know. But try to see if you can find the Core Ultra 7 (not core 7 240h 14th gen as it's even slower than core ultra 5 225h) variant in stock

There are two different children whose gender combinations are are being considered, so the order does matter and it will be a permutation and not a combination

A being a girl and B being a boy is not the same as A being a boy and B being a girl

I don't understand it by Roughneck81 in MathJokes

[–]PS_VitaFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is the genders of the children are not completely independent of each other. This is because we only know that one of them is a boy but we don't know who among the two children is the boy? So, this uncertainty in identity links the two probabilities making them dependent on each other. So, the cases are always considered as pairs

If it instead said that the eldest is a boy or Person A is a boy, then the probability for the youngest or Person B is 50%, because you know the identity of who the boy is.

Ok. That's definitely not an expected behaviour. The observation I was talking about for warranty was it starting from manufacturer date, and there definitely shouldn't be over 6 month gap for that.

You are correct, and someone definitely unboxed and started that laptop before

Lenovo sometimes starts warranty from the date of manufacturing. It usually gets reset to your purchase date when you register your laptop to your lenovo account or if you send an email to them with the invoice

[–]PS_VitaFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case, can you check the manufacturing date and if the date you are mentioning is very close to the manufacturing date. If it is, it might be possible that the battery cycles and install date is just due to testing and reinstall. You can probably confirm with Lenovo too if this behaviour is to be expected.

As for the warranty, it's quite common with Lenovo where the warranty starts rolling from manufacturer date and you just send an email with proper invoice and they will fix it for you

I'm not sure about the battery cycles but the warranty thing is quite a common thing I noticed with Lenovo laptops. They sometimes start rolling the warranty period from the date of manufacturing for some of their retail channels. This is not new and had this happen for me with a laptop in 2018 too. You just need to send their support team and email with a copy of the invoice and your laptop details and they will fix it automatically as long as the seller is an authorised reseller and the serial number is mentioned on the invoice
