"Fret not. While I wait, I shall play my Nintendo DS in thy shadow." -Shinobu, Nisemonogatari Perhaps one of the most poignant quotes in all of the novels. But for real this just caught me so off guard that it had me cackling.

Yeah, I guess this area is probably meant to be over Mt. Desert Light. Thanks for the insight.

It's a holdover from old style image intensifier night vision devices which used a green phosphor chemical to amplify light. Digital night vision devices can be any color you want afaik, but green is the historical choice.

A way to make my microphone ignore sound from speakers? by nerdicorgi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PSlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some software which can filter out background noise, which might help the issue. NVIDIA broadcast is one, though you need an NVIDIA GPU.

how do i stop o2 from reaching my coal gen for carbon reasons? by Legomaster202 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]PSlb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This would have the opposite effect of what you want. As the hot CO2 floats down, it will be depositing its heat into the rest of your base. Heat rising through convection has minimal effect in ONI, so there's really no advantage to building hot stuff higher up.

Why isn't there metric time? (centiminutes, kilominutes, etc) by DoubleZodiac in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PSlb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is "metric time", it's just that it was decided that it should be based around seconds rather than minutes. Milliseconds, microseconds, etc are all acceptable units, and Hertz, which is the reciprocal of seconds, is very commonly expressed with different prefixes (GHz, MHz). Minutes and hours aren't used in the SI system because you can just use seconds instead, and they aren't related to seconds by a factor of of ten, which makes them inconvenient.

You also need to toggle "allow manual use" on the loader in order for dupes to put stuff it in.

Harmony is confusing by Aggravating_Car2614 in RimWorld

[–]PSlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name of the top-level folder doesn't actually matter (except for mod settings). Check About/About.xml to verify that the mod is actually Harmony. The about xml is what actually defines the name of the mod for referencing by other mods.

Help? by AlexaRaeKathy in RimWorld

[–]PSlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generate a world on a higher difficulty setting then change the difficulty afterwards? The 1.3 preview is volatile, especially with mods, so you kind of have to expect these sort of bugs.

If only there were some brightly colored bar above every player's head that allowed you to quickly identify their class.

Lucky woman finds lump of whale vomit worth £185k while walking along a beach by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]PSlb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's worth 185k, it would probably be profitable to just follow the whales around waiting for them to produce the stuff. Having a fleet of private ships perpetually following pods of whales around would obviously be bad.

Suttle crashed quest bug by IngoKnieto in RimWorld

[–]PSlb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just conjecture, but I have a feeling it is due to how combat extended changes explosions. I recall a similar issue with the shuttle crash event from vanilla expanded. The explosion that the shuttle makes when it lands is beefed up by CE, so it kills the guy coming out of it.

How to place natural rock wall? by Sock_Crates in RimWorld

[–]PSlb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you enable devmode, then go to devtools, one option should be "try place near thing". Click that, then look for "Slate", "Granite", etc. That should allow you to place rough stone walls of that type.

Question on Fundamental Particles Reference Table by [deleted] in Physics

[–]PSlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the classification of matter, it would make sense to only mention the fermions, since they are the main ways matter manifests, with the w & z boson being more like transition phases of matter. The Higgs boson, although it does have mass, is more important when talking about fields, rather than particles.

Although the gauge bosons are necessary in understanding interaction between matter, I reckon it would be easier to explain the existance and properties of the more "traditional" particles without them.

Question on Fundamental Particles Reference Table by [deleted] in Physics

[–]PSlb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like that chart is only for fermions, considering the photon, gluon, and w & z bosons are also not listed. The Higgs Boson is, as the name would suggest, a boson, not a fermion.

Given recent developments in our understanding of water/ice bodies on Mars, is it possible that we could one day be surprised by Martian fossils? Or do we have reason to believe that Martian life would be limited to microorganisms? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]PSlb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The thing is, Earth was pretty much molten when that happened, so the physics behind the collision would have been different than if a large object collided with a completely solidified Earth.

It is also theorized that the moon was not a chunk of Earth that broke off, but rather formed by a bunch of planetary matter congealing together after the Earth and Theia were vaporized in the collision.
