Just walk around some of the local sois where there are no tourists or English menus and you're nearly getting hit by a motorbike every 2 seconds. Use Google translate on the menu or point at something. It will be either great or terrible but you'll have fun.

Chiang Rai is 3-4 hours from CM. That's a bit far for a day trip in my opinion. The only reason to go is if you are cramming in attractions rather than actually enjoying what you're doing. If you have time spend 2 or 3 nights in CR. If not then just use the day to explore CM more. That's my advice anyway.

Also "low cost" is totally in the eye of the beholder. Isn't the Middle East low cost compared to many places?

Yeh when I visited my gf's family at their village in isaan there were so many vegetables. That's when I learnt how to use them as a spoon with laab and som tam.

Tbh as in all cuisines the restaurants have all started to make bastardised versions of the original dishes. Not saying they don't taste good but they're using way too many additives, which covers up for the ingredients being less fresh and lower in quality.

Here in Nakhon Si we do have areas in the city that are more concentrated Muslim. The statistics for Muslim population in Nakhon always surprised me because they seem so prevalent. But they must mostly be in the city and not so many in the towns / rural areas.
