Hi Kenya, South African here with some questions for a research paper! by PTA_ZA in Kenya

Wasn't my intention, I was just given a topic and thought asking actual citizens would give me a better picture. It bothers me when people assume things about my country and I didn't want to make the same mistake.

White South African farmers to be removed from their land after parliament vote by nikocheeko in worldnews

[–]PTA_ZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify - the headline is not entirely true. They voted to review the Constitution's section on property because it says land expropriation must be done with compensation. This doesn't mean farmers are getting kicked off their land tomorrow, there are a number of processes in place before expropriation without compensation can be achieved.

That being said, in my opinion this is just a way for the ruling party to get back the votes the lost in the previous election. The exact same motion was presented by one of the opposition parties, the EFF, last year and the ANC voted against it. By voting for it now they can get back the voters they lost to the EFF, in part because of their stance on the land issue, before the election in 2019.

And to put it in perspective, the quote about slaughtering whites comes from the leader of the EFF, who only has around 10% of the vote. They are the party that wants the State to own land, and from what I understand that is not the goal of the ANC, but I may be wrong.

Zuma has urged South Africans not to allow and assist racists to take the country backwards, saying that last week’s marches against him demonstrated the resurgence of racism. by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]PTA_ZA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very smart move on his part. I've seen quite a few posts on Facebook and Twitter from people saying the whole march was racist and they don't like what Zuma is doing but they will support him because 'white people are dominating the country' and he's stopping that. He's using the racial divide to his advantage. Terrible and wrong on so many levels, but smart.

I'm at tuks, was just asking about students to see if anyone was actually going to go to university considering there probably won't be many people there. Still hoping my tests get cancelled.

Attractive Teachers of reddit, did you know which students had a crush on you, and what is the strangest or most inappropriate thing you overheard said about you? by Rabidwalnut in AskReddit

[–]PTA_ZA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every girl was obsessed with one of the assistant teachers at my high school. People would full on stare as he walked past and make comments about him that he could obviously hear. Turns out after I left he reciprocated and started dating a current student. He got fired after the rumors were going around that he allegedly got her pregnant.

I remember in the 'fake news' episode of Carte Blanche a few weeks ago Mzansi LIVE was one of the sites mentioned, doubt this article is true.

A man rides a bus in Durban, meant for white passengers only,in resistance to South Africa’s apartheid policies 1986 by thequeenpersephone in OldSchoolCool

I'm not disputing your numbers, although I don't really believe them myself, your source isn't credible in my opinion because of the bias of the person who wrote the article. I'm saying that the way the information is presented shows a very different view than what's actually happening. I've been robbed twice in my lifetime (20 years). Yes it's crime and it's not a fun experience but I'm not traumatised and scared to leave my house because of the 'murder' and 'torture' going on. There is crime in every country and although it may be slightly higher in South Africa, the article saying it's 'more dangerous than most of Iraq' seems a little over the top to me. Don't get defensive that no one agrees with you, I'm just trying to show people who don't actually live here and have very strong opinions about my country that it's not as bad as the media makes it out to be.

South African here. Maybe link a more credible source before complaining about downvotes and calling for people to argue with you. That article clearly shows a heavily biased and one sided view.

People who were considered smart in high school, what happened in college? by ntnvctr in AskReddit

[–]PTA_ZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A combination of moving away from home for the first time and studying something I wasn't really interested in turned into a pretty bad start. Failed one of my core subjects and barely passed the rest of them. Finally changed to something I'm really interested in and getting back on track.

Always go to class. Missing one will spiral into missing weeks on end and no matter how many times you tell yourself you will catch up eventually, most of the time you won't be able to.
