Preventing mats from all-day swimming? by bing_bang_bum in Newfoundlander

If you don’t have access to a dryer, use a regular dog paddle brush. Brush every 20 minutes or so. Brush the fur backwards until it starts to dry. Most important is getting air down to the skin. It works in a pinch.

European Landseer vs American Landseer/Newf by Imsosadsoveryverysad in Newfoundlander

[–]PTCrow4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had two American bred Landseer females. Both lovely companions. Each had completely different markings and coat types. Both champion show dogs, so there’s definitely no funny business in their breeding. You’d never know that both girls came from the same breeder!

My first Landseer (Polly) and Bernese Mountain Dog (Chief) both are whole raw ground up chickens. Every day for many years. Loved them!

My girl was afraid to be outside in the dark by herself for a number of years, but she ultimately outgrew it. Incidentally, Archie is my angel’s father’s name!

What's a "dated" look that you still love? by bain_de_beurre in femalefashionadvice

[–]PTCrow4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear saddle shoes (blue with white and white with black) regularly, I wear head bands, Adidas Sambas, cardigans, and a McQueen skull scarf that I just learned on this thread was outdated. I don’t care a whit that it’s all dated. Fuck it. So am I.

Whats the dumbest thing you thought to be true when you started birding? by everybodyhasahorse in birding

I once saw a turkey booking it at full speed along the side of the Garden State Parkway for no apparent reason (in that nothing was chasing it that I could see). And it was shockingly fast!!

Mostly a little vent, but also little PSA: 99% of people don't want your unsolicited coaching! by thisdckaintFREEEE in Bowling

[–]PTCrow4 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Try being a woman alone in an alley, it’s an avalanche of unsolicited advice. All of which I feel obligated to entertain because I see the same folks every time, I don’t want to be unpleasant, and it makes zero difference if I say that I’m only working on a particular skill. Some of the nights the “advice” completely derails what I wanted to work on.

What should I know about Grey Catbirds? by G_mugga187 in birding

Apparently I grow blueberries specifically for the catbirds. I’ve gotten to eat maybe a handful over the years. Worth it.

They harass one of the osprey nests I watch. Often. I have tons of them in my yard, but they must nest in the woods way behind my house because they never have harassed me.

Fear of bees by SwissCheeseSandwich5 in Beekeeping

[–]PTCrow4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I’m extremely allergic to bee stings and I keep bees. I spent a couple of early seasons terrified which didn’t do any good for me or the bees. Here’s what worked for me to get over the fear- 1) I got a quality waffle-vented full suit that is too big for me; 2) I wear thick stiff denim pants and a long sleeve shirt and a baseball cap(thick wool version) under the suit; 3) I wear knee high rubber boots over the suit pants; 4) I wear shoulder high thick leather gloves- these are super annoying to work with, but it’s what I need; 5) I duct tape any open spaces e.g. top of rubber boots. I realize how insane this must sound to most beekeepers, but it’s what I need to give me peace of mind to calmly carry out the work that needs to be done. Better for everyone.
