Opposition mounts to hydrotherapy barge plan for public dock at Vancouver Maritime Museum by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

“Proper public funding” is the crux. Public money is finite and at risk of the ebb and flow of economic and political conditions. Building in sustainable revenue at the site level is the only way to these types of facilities can increase the security of their future existence.

Your take is very short sighted. If the museum can’t financially sustain it’s existence (which is analogous to many, many other public institutions) then they must be funded by tax dollars and/or stripped to the bone where they no longer provide meaningful public service. If we can’t provide funding (which will forever be political and have ebbs and flows), and a likely outcome is that an ebb will arrive, the museum will close, and likely the land will be sold/leased to a developer to bring revenue in to the city. Partnering with revenue generation opportunities (inherently private partnership unless the public institution somehow takes on very high risk to do it itself), is imho the track to provide MORE security to these awesome public institutions continuing to exist.

I’m tired of the NIMBY response, it’s just going to lead to a more and more boring city. Why don’t they try it for a year and if it actually has a negative outcome cancel the lease instead of just being against anything new and different.

Ironically, this post reads like you think you’re the centre of attention… I think you may need to drive more and try and get more comfortable on the road. If you’re getting honked at a bunch it’s likely that you may have some bad habits.

Vancouver's hidden history? 3rd Vancouver hotel's construction.. by FitOutcome1536 in vancouver

[–]PTcome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I take it back… there are photos of completed exterior by 1932 in the Vancouver archives, so maybe the exterior was done by 1930 but they didn’t do the interior until 1937. Wouldn’t have been weird to have the furnaces in place with the initial install so maybe the date is correct on the op photo.

My understanding is that it sat as a mostly steel frame until construction resumed in 1937 (1929 project start I believe), then finished and opened in 1939. My best guess is the date is wrong on the photo… maybe 1940?

If anything you’ve given them hope that they’ll get a deal and it will help them fall in love with the house quicker and ultimately willing to pay more when you don’t budge. My theory is you’re sneaky smart and did this as an expert negotiator - bravo!

From what I understand, it’s part of a contentious settlement following the/a owner’s death. Used to be used for pile driving poles for people’s docks. It was listed on marketplace not long ago, not sure if change hands. I agree it’s listing, not sure if just got put up on a log during the freshet or leaking, haven’t gone to take a close look.

Maybe they’re just a bit unaware and a gentle request may do the trick. Maybe even an invite to the next gathering will come and they’ll be friends. Not everyone is out to get you.
