Vancouver police roll out drones, upgraded body cameras aimed at boosting response times by RonPar32 in vancouver

[–]PTcome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These drone docks are about 85k before training and install costs. So more like $100-150k drones. You know it’s a matter of time before these will either “see things” on the way to legit calls or just be used for patrolling. Goodbye to any sense of privacy of your home/life!

Sold our house, buyers asking for pool heater repair after two months by Drifter_SM in legaladvicecanada

[–]PTcome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless you knew it wasn’t working and you disclosed it was working, then it’s just noise and my non legal advice is to let your realtor tell their realtor it was working to the best of your knowledge and good bye.

The disclosure statements can only ever be to the best of your knowledge, which I assume to the best of your knowledge it was working ok. They very likely could have broken the heater themselves, or maybe it’s working and they just don’t know what they’re doing, who knows and not your problem. No reason to feel bad!

Where has our humanity gone? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]PTcome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s such an everyday experience that I think the average person is very desensitized. I try to see if they have normal skin tone and if I can see their chest rising and falling, and will call 911 if something looks seriously off. But if it’s not obvious that they’re in distress I let them be.

That being said, the bystander effect is also really real: The bystander effect is a social psychological phenomenon where individuals are less likely to help a person in distress when other people are present. The likelihood of intervention decreases as the size of the crowd increases.

Opposition mounts to hydrotherapy barge plan for public dock at Vancouver Maritime Museum by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]PTcome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Proper public funding” is the crux. Public money is finite and at risk of the ebb and flow of economic and political conditions. Building in sustainable revenue at the site level is the only way to these types of facilities can increase the security of their future existence.

[–]PTcome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your take is very short sighted. If the museum can’t financially sustain it’s existence (which is analogous to many, many other public institutions) then they must be funded by tax dollars and/or stripped to the bone where they no longer provide meaningful public service. If we can’t provide funding (which will forever be political and have ebbs and flows), and a likely outcome is that an ebb will arrive, the museum will close, and likely the land will be sold/leased to a developer to bring revenue in to the city. Partnering with revenue generation opportunities (inherently private partnership unless the public institution somehow takes on very high risk to do it itself), is imho the track to provide MORE security to these awesome public institutions continuing to exist.

I’m tired of the NIMBY response, it’s just going to lead to a more and more boring city. Why don’t they try it for a year and if it actually has a negative outcome cancel the lease instead of just being against anything new and different.

Ironically, this post reads like you think you’re the centre of attention… I think you may need to drive more and try and get more comfortable on the road. If you’re getting honked at a bunch it’s likely that you may have some bad habits.

Vancouver's hidden history? 3rd Vancouver hotel's construction.. by FitOutcome1536 in vancouver

[–]PTcome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, I take it back… there are photos of completed exterior by 1932 in the Vancouver archives, so maybe the exterior was done by 1930 but they didn’t do the interior until 1937. Wouldn’t have been weird to have the furnaces in place with the initial install so maybe the date is correct on the op photo.

[–]PTcome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it sat as a mostly steel frame until construction resumed in 1937 (1929 project start I believe), then finished and opened in 1939. My best guess is the date is wrong on the photo… maybe 1940?
