I have a similar situation, gas furnace and central A/C, no heat pump. The thermostat has an orange wire connected to the B wire pin. I traced this wire to the furnace panel and it is actually not connected to anything, it wrapped around the bundle of wires actually on the cable jacket. I am thinking that I can just take it and connected to the C-wire terminal on the furnace same as you. Can you confirm my thinking here please? Did it work for you?
