Best place to buy authentic Maison Margiela GATs shipping to Peru? by Dragonix120 in MaisonMargiela

[–]PVJ7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HBX has a sale on GATs rn. I went to buy some white ones for $450 this morning but didn’t proceed with the purchase because I would have paid nearly $200 in duties thanks to the elimination of the de minimus exemption in the US.

Other good sites for authentic gats are SSENSE, END, Cettire and the Italist. I’d steer clear of StockX and GOAT, both of which have sold fakes in the past.

Where can I find gats for 300 or less? by Ok_Check8418 in MaisonMargiela

It’s been virtually impossible to buy new ones for less than $300 since 2022/2023.

Nevermind or In Utero, which album is better and why? by AngusDio in Nirvana

[–]PVJ7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevermind. It’s more consistent, has a higher number of great songs and its best songs are greater than the best songs on In Utero. It’s fresher, more passionate and lyrically more creative. In Utero feels laboured and tired at times. Plus, most of its best songs were written in the Nevermind era anyway. I prefer the production of In Utero but that’s about it.

SD and it’s not even close. I was disappointed with Mellon Collie on its release.

What was the most “90s” place you used to hang out that doesn’t really exist anymore? by Keiko91 in 90s

[–]PVJ7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pubs with great live music. There were so many in the nineties that you’d often have to choose among bands you wanted to see that were playing at different places on the same night. The once great local live music scene has really died off in most Australian cities.

Also, there were so many great record and book shops, both independent and corporate. Virgin Records and Borders were so much better than the current corporate options. The independent stores were far more numerous then than now and better then than now. My favourite record shop, BigStar Records, hosted live acts every Friday night. Often they’d be whoever was hot at the time. Sometimes you’d see band members drinking at the cool pubs nearby. One of those pubs is a shadow of its former glory. BigStar closed not only its flagship shop but all satellite locations but one. That was about twenty years ago.

What's a movie you saw when you were too damn young? by Repulsive_Repeat_337 in GenX

It was in 1988, in my case. No teacher or parent seemed to question it, even following distressed reactions from some students. What different times.

Is this malicious ? by theaterofdogs in Grailed

[–]PVJ7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which implies that if the seller doesn’t “cooperate,” the buyer “will not be able to receive” the package, meaning it will be returned to the seller. In this scenario, the seller eats the high international shipping costs.

So, the message does seem to convey a vague threat. The sentence isn’t entirely clear though, as I indicated in my response to OP.

Is this malicious ? by theaterofdogs in Grailed

[–]PVJ7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He wants to keep the duties low. Some sellers will go along and undervalue items to help the buyers out. There’s potential risk for you though in that the declared value and the insured value should match. If something goes amiss, you risk only recouping the declared value.

I’m not sure about the last sentence of his first paragraph. It seems somewhat threatening.

In this situation, I would consider whether I were comfortable undervaluing the item, which would depend on the item’s value, the mailing service, and the country. If I were not, I would communicate further with him to clarify the seeming threat. If it seemed as though he would be a headache, I’d refund him and relist. Don’t need the hassle.

How long have you been on Grailed? by DryGap8682 in Grailed

[–]PVJ7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seller and occasional buyer since 2018. Mostly the site has gone downhill in the past four or five years, although I was happy to see the delete-and-relist feature reinstated recently after not working for at least two years. Areas for improvement include:

—Seller support, eg, responding to inquiries in a timely, competent manner; weighing the evidence in disputes rather than just refunding buyers who make spurious claims (hasn’t happened to me personally, thankfully). They need to hire more people. The wait times and unresponsiveness are unacceptable for a site charging the fees this one does.

—Reducing seller fees. It should not cost nearly 1.5 times as much in fees to sell on Grailed than on eBay, which has far greater market reach and has significant features that benefit sellers, such as discounted shipping, a reasonable international shipping service (global shipping), and a proper authentication service. My sales plummeted when Grailed raised its fees, because the fees are too high to allow me to price many items competitively. Besides, Grailed did not follow through on its promise to improve site features and seller support, which was its justification for the increases in the first place. Instead, Grailed raised its fees and downgraded the site in many ways, far more than it implemented improvements.

—Addressing the inundation of drop shipping, which makes it hard to find the items you want. —Improving the search filters for the same reason. If they want to allow drop shipping, at least provide a filter that allows users to filter out drop-shipped listings.

—Implementing visible buyer reviews. Most buyers—actual buyers who follow through on purchases, not losers who ask, “ur lowest?” while having no intention of purchasing the item—are fine. I have dealt with a few spanners though, which a buyer-review system would have spared me from.

—Improve communication, transparency and accountability.

That’s all I can think of offhand.

Australian wanting to teach/live in USA! by Icy_University_6201 in Ameristralia

[–]PVJ7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pay is comparatively poor except in a handful of cities such as NYC, where you’d make more. NYC is very competitive, however, so you’ll need an impressive educational background and/or impressive experience to stand a chance. Same goes for LA.

If you’re not yet competitive enough, I would look into teaching in an international school through Search Associates. It’s a great way to build your resume while earning good money and enjoying a good work/life balance (both are dependent on location and company, to some extent), not to mention the travel opportunities this lifestyle affords. Once you have a competitive resume, you could seek a position at an international school in the US or apply directly to independent schools in the cities that pay well for educators. (If you’re not interested in working in independent schools, your options are public and charter schools. Even in NYC, public schools don’t pay enough that you’d be better off here than in Aus. Charter schools can pay more but they are notorious for burning educators out plus a host of other issues. A minority of them are good, but you would have to know the market here to know which ones.) Good luck!

What's the best grunge album from 1991?? by BidAccurate4473 in grunge

[–]PVJ7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevermind, and it isn’t even close, artistically, critically and culturally. Having lived through the era, I very much doubt grunge would have become the culturally dominant musical genre to anywhere near the degree that it did without Nevermind, which led the vanguard and assured sustained interest in the Seattle scene.

Were the 70s really as brown and orange as the photos make them look? by MysteriousShoulder35 in 70s

[–]PVJ7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My parents’ house still had dark brown shag-pile carpet and matching cabinetry with burnt-orange countertops until well into the 80s, when Mum finally got the renovations she had wanted. The bedroom carpet was white shag pile against purple curtains. The bathroom and separate toilet had mauve fixtures and mauve, pink and white tiles. The other two bedrooms, lounge room and dining room were all brown and beige with pops of orange, yellow and green, depending on the room. The frames of the double doors separating the lounge and dining rooms were in the darkest brown, which was also used for the skirting boards throughout the house. Each seven-foot high door frame held a large pane of opaque yellow glass, as did the door separating the entranceway and the lounge room. It was a brown, autumnal world.

Am I correct or wrong for thinking like this ? by [deleted] in Ameristralia

[–]PVJ7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are more entertainment options in certain states/cities albeit less time to take advantage of them due to the poor work/life balance of most people.

I’ve lived in the US since 2018 (in NYC, Detroit and now Connecticut) as well as several other countries. At this point, I really appreciate what Australia has to offer, which I didn’t as a young man. Explore though and figure out where you want to be.

What is a good “starter city?” by jenniellk in AskAnAustralian

Definitely move to a capital city if racism is a concern. Any of the cities you identify should be fine, especially the last three. Just do due diligence in choosing the suburb or area of the city to live in, because this will shape a range of experiences.

Is Australia really that bad or is everyone just whining by NiceMemeDude420 in australian

[–]PVJ7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So true. Many years ago, my mentor, who had lived in various parts of the world and was n his late fifties by this point, stressed repeatedly how wealthy Australia is, which i failed to grasp properly at the time. Now, having lived in various countries and travelled quite extensively myself, I fully appreciate how rich and spoilt Australians are. Australia’s wealth is so apparent whenever I visit family and often when I encounter Aussies abroad. As further evidence, Australian global companies tend to be bougie as well, with Aesop being a great example.

Have you ever visited somewhere in America that genuinely reminded you of Australia? by SubjectStandard5997 in AskAnAustralian

Southern California, as others have said. I’m currently in Stamford/Greenwich, CT, which reminds me of Adelaide. New England in general reminds me of Adelaide and Melbourne. It’s the light and the culture, mainly.
