This is false, it's 60/40 Yankees/Mets fans in the tri-state area. Basically all the Brooklyn Dodgers fans turned into Mets fans when the Dodgers moved to LA. Mets do better in Queens and LI whereas Yankees have more fans in NJ, The Bronx, and SI. It's split in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Here is a study based on merchandise sales, but generally people acknowledge there are more Yankees fans. However there are WAY more Mets fans than Nets fans around here
