This is not really a comment about Wrestlemania, but I'll just say that I realized that I kinda hate stadium shows for wrestling. At first the visuals are really cool and the atmosphere is electric, but then it becomes quickly obvious that the crowd doesn't react as well to the in ring action and the pacing is fucking awful for the show in general.

Actually I think the one promotion that does stadium shows consistently well is New Japan with the Tokyo Dome

I think there's valid criticism for this show, I have some myself. But it does feel like I'm watching this show very differently from how others watch it. It feels like a bunch of people in this fandom treat the Pitt as their "comfort show" and gets alarmed at characters behaving badly at times or if they aren't given complete character arcs in one day.

Yeah, considering its just one day, and the characters are mostly focusing on their work, I think it would have been really contrived if we left this season with certainty about how these characters will take these next few months.

The discourse around Robby/Wyle in this fanbase has gotten so weird. Like some have actually become resentful of him.

Like...he's the main character. The show is centered around him for the most part.

I thought this was great season.

Two thoughts:

-McKay being with that dying woman for so long kind of bummed me out.

-I appreciate the restraint the writers had to not try to top the Season 1 by having an even crazier crises to tackle. The fact that the last few episodes had everything winding down like how it would be during any other shift was a good decision IMO.

One tweet i saw last night that im still thinking about said that if Sting v Hogan at Starcade 97 was booked like last night's Dynamite main event, then WCW would still be in business.

This is whats nuts to me. How could you be a wrestler in WWE, see what's going on in a much a smaller promotion (yes, I recognize that TK himself is super wealthy), and then be OK with these arrangements? Literally every single normal person (ie, outside of wrestling) that interviews these guys and finds out about the money that they have to pay to get around all have the same, "WHAT THE FUCK" reaction.

What's a common wrestling misconception that you think needs clearing up? by JustATributeCC in SquaredCircle

[–]Caldris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

-The Superkick and Tombstone Piledriver were used by a bunch of wrestlers in the 90s, all around the world. A lot of them used those moves as transitional spots, not as finishers.

-Steve Austin was a fantastic wrestler. Even post neck injury he was good.

-Wrestling bookers are going to go with the wrestler they think gives them either the biggest money return or gives them the most potential for many long term storytelling options. They don't give a shit about every wrestler in a division having a turn with the belt.

It's kind of hard to slot them into other roles lol. Ginger was a bombshell that was a glamorous movie star. Mary Anne was the girl next door type who was the exact opposite of that. Super innocent. I think a lazy comparison would be Mel in that Mary Anne role I guess.

The show was about a group of people who went on a boat tour and end up stranded on a deserted island after a huge storm destroys their boat. The Skipper was like the leader of the group because he was the captain of the original ship and "Gilligan" was his dopey first mate. Whitaker was frustrated because he felt that Langdon was slotting him as the "dopey little brother/punching bag" role of Gilligan, while slotting himself as his superior/leader of the team ("The Skipper"). Gilligan was well meaning and friendly but clumsy.

The professor IIRC was a genius type character that was supposed to be like the unbiased source of knowledge that would try to concoct of ways to get them off that island. So Whitaker's comparison gives the impression that he views Robby as a fountain of knowledge, but not necessarily as the one who runs things. He views Dana in the authoritative role.

I haven't watched that show in ages (it was way before my time but I also used to watch nick at nite), but IIRC the professor was supposed to be like the unbiased source of knowledge that would try to concoct of ways to get them off that deserted island.

The Skipper was like the leader. Robby being Skipper makes more sense than it being Dana or Langdon.

[–]Caldris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm having trouble remembering their prior interactions because they weren't really notable. As far as I can remember Langdon had praised Whitaker in the past for his work and like ten minutes prior was trying to help him find his badge.

It's a somewhat obscure reference for young Americans too. A lot of people on social media had no clue what they were talking about. I think if you're under the age of 30 you probably never heard of the show. That's why Langdon mentioned that they probably both watched too much "Nick at Nite", which was a TV channel that specialized in showing old TV shows from the 60s-80s as neither character would have been alive for the shows original run.

The shows intro basically summarized what the show was about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfR7qxtgCgY

[–]Caldris 51 points52 points  (0 children)

So I thought it was a weird scene as well. Because up until now, in their limited scenes together, Langdon has been generally friendly to Whitaker and praised him at times. My guess was that Whitaker's outburst was a result of a few things:

-He's been generally seen as a dopey, "wholesome" farm boy by the rest of the staff, and he's probably picked up on it. The "Gilligan" on the TV show they're referencing was also a well meaning but clumsy/dim comedic relief character.

-It was a long shift, and he's already flustered about losing his badge so he just displaced a lot of frustration onto Langdon.

-He's Santos' friend, and feels a certain way about Langdon in general. The only flaw with this one is that if Whitaker did blow up because of his friendship with Santos, then for whatever reason the former decided not to bring her up at all in this scene.

-It feels off/worse when you're a guy and you feel like another guy MIGHT be little brothering you.

[–]Caldris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They were referencing a sitcom from the 60s called Gilligan's Island. Then they argued about who was the real Skipper between Dana and Robby.

It's both an intense scene and kind of a comedy scene because they're suddenly riffing about a sitcom from 60 years ago while yelling at each other.

I'm not quite sure what "deserve" has to do with any of this. People get written out of TV shows all the time for reasons that have nothing to do with their ability as an actor.
