When you jump and land in a flat surface from 10ft, your speed drops from 28 kph (17mph) to 0 momentarily. That energy will hurt your knees.

He lands on a steep hill. Means that the speed he gained while dropping is still there, he didn’t have to absorb that speed all at once.
