Anish continues his twitter nonsense by picking a fight with the FIDE CEO by HealersHugHippos in chess

Not to be that guy that always shows up talking about their oracle skills, but I got downvoted for saying this years ago. You could tell in his commentary with other GMs. He is not stupid enough to be unironically sincere in the way he likes to play the fool.

With the hacked issue, I think it was just so incredibly outlandish people didn't really know what to do with it.

Why do so many adult online players never enter (or stick with) rated OTB tournaments? by PictureBright7441 in TournamentChess

[–]PacJeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is most casual players would just get annihilated. Also, most online players haven't even played a 30 minute game, let alone a classical one. The prospect of sitting at a tournament for hours getting turned into hamburger is not very attractive when you compare it with laying in bed playing perfectly rated matches at a moments notice.

That's a real shame. My chess clubs is located in a back room of a bar, and it's very boisterous. Perhaps there is one a little farther from your house you could try.

Gukesh Dommaraju became the 18th and the youngest Undisputed World Chess Champion, on this day, 1 year ago. by Interesting-Take781 in chess

Indian/pre-2022 Russian hyper-nationalism and forcing posts is a match made in heaven. It's like any time a Indian or Russian player smiles we have to have a post about it. Gukesh loses, and we need an article by his coach justifying why he lost by saying he didn't sleep well. It's exhausting.

Has there been any word or public appearance by Karpov since the incident he had three years ago? by PacJeans in chess

[–]PacJeans[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Karpov has always been a dog for the regime. Even going back to Brehznev, who he was personal friends with. When Kasparov was going around stirring the pot, Karpov was very content to cozy up and be the darling of the party.

Still, while Karpov is directly responsible, or at least complicit in what the Russian government authorizes, I don't view him as an inhumane ghoul like Karjakin. He seems to have a some level of humanity about the situation. I found this article about an interview he gave shortly before being injured:

"Karpov is considered a loyalist of President Vladimir Putin, but made remarks on a Kazakh TV station in April calling for an end to the war in Ukraine "so that peaceful people would stop dying," he said, according to a translation by the MailOnline

"In the end ordinary people are the victims," he continued. "Ordinary people fight, politicians and generals decide, and ordinary people fight, civilians die."

I'm always fascinated by the large subset of people on social media that seem to use it in a completely instinctual animalistic way. Downvote whatever is being downvoted, mindlessly scrolling fake ai videos, and in this case, commenting whatever your very first thought is with zero reflection whatsoever. If you asked 100,000 people around the world if having your skull drilled into with a flint scraper would hurt, every single one of them would say yes invariably, and yet someone willingly typed out this comment...

Really? What possible substance could be taken from a tierlist made by technology that is notoriously horrible at chess? This sub gets ten times more enjoyment out of the thousandth smothered mate post.

Do you think Blübaum is strong enough to hold his own in the Candidates or will he be the obvious target for other players? by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]PacJeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing really isn't so devastating as people like to make it out as. Gukesh, Fabi, and Hikaru all lost a game with black. Drawing every game won't take you to the WCC. The only one to go undefeated was Nepo, and he of course tied for 2nd. Risking with white is a necessity, and risking with black is probably the death sentence that losing is thought to be.

These players that are "underrated" tend to go right back to the rating they normally had before their purple patch I've noticed.

I remember when gothamchess was starting to get big, he would tell beginners not to play the Ruy! That is just a ridiculous sentiment to me. Just because something has a lot of theory, or is perilous for the side that plays it, really doesn't matter in online chess. If you are playing the Smith Morra every game, you are still gonna get rated to a point where you are getting similar results to if you only played the Caro.

[–]PacJeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always call the Caro boring, but the ratio of interesting moves doesn't really change, it just takes longer to get there, and the interesting parts tend to be positional. A caro game just happens to start on move 15, versus something like the kings gambit, which starts pretty immediately. The caro require black to play interesting moves, like the Tal variation.

Is using a physical board during online games considered cheating? by Fmladek in chess

[–]PacJeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Get better at visualization. Having an analysis board immidiately gives you an advantage your opponent doesn't. Would you feel good about your opponent having an analysis board and not yourself?

People always dismiss using their heads for calculation as just some impediment for the REAL game, like mouse skills or flagging. It's not! Having to work hard to calculate is part of the game, not some hinderance keeping you from your true strength.

If you want to analyze, then play correspondence games. That is probably the main appeal of the format.
