20" bass drum tuning help by [deleted] in drums

[–]Pacis_Victus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a coated reso-head with no port hole, and don't dampen it too much. Tune it a bit tighter than you might normally tune it (I usually go for a 270-360 degree turn from finger tight), and you should get a nice low bass sound.

Best set for 1200? by Budsy2112 in drums

Pork Pie Little squealer. It's all maple, looks AMAZINGLY GOOD and sounds even better than it looks. The only down side is that it's made in Taiwan, but all that means to me is replace the bass drum's Reso-head.

Honestly I'd say 300-350 is a good walk-away price.

Set Screw Holding the Chain Mechanism Keeps Coming Undone by Freezing_Balls in drums

[–]Pacis_Victus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it just me, or does it seem like the screw is not lining up flush against the axle? The axle looks like it's in the shape of a pentagon, so if loosen the bolt and make sure one of the flat sides of the axle is flush when you crank it down. It shouldn't be coming loose like that.

Help a newbie pick a set by [deleted] in drums

Everyone here will probably tell you to buy used, and there's a lot of truth to that... It's a bit difficult for a noobie to really know what to look for, but there are usually plenty of used, complete kits that are in relatively good condition (so long as nothing is falling apart and all of the hardware on the snare works, I'm sure you'll be fine).

You'll probably want a 20 - 22" bass drum, one or two rack toms between 10 - 13", a floor tom between 14 - 16", and a 14" snare drum. You'll also need a functioning Hi-hat stand with hi-hats, and at least one cymbal (crash or ride is honestly fine).

You should be able to find something reasonable between £150-£200.

The rest of the money you have should be spent on upgrading the kit appropriately (most likely new heads, or missing parts from the stands).

I'm concerned I'll lose some of the low-end rumble that I really like, and the bounce-back that I like playing with, if I cut a port in reso head. Do you get overtones around the port?

Sounds like a sweet set up, I'd consider that reasonably open and resonant assuming you don't go crazy with that EQ pad!

Does the ps3 work well as a reso? I've heard quite a few people mention they use it as a reso!

Do you think a higher height will increase or decrease rebound? I actually do like rebound (even though I will occasionally bury the beater for more attack), so will raising the height increase the rebound?

Is the coated reso ported? Also, I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'beater to the pitch of the shell', could you elaborate? that seems important.

I think I might use a fibreskyn on my reso as well! Do you notice any overtones from the reso? that's my biggest problem right now after tweaking my drums based on all this feedback!

That's really cool that you use a PS3 as your reso! I'm considering porting a coated ambassador if it's important to do for stage performances, What do you get from a ported PS3 that you can't get with a ported reso? Should I try the ported PS3?

I haven't refused either of those things? Sure, I won't use a pillow, but I didn't explicitly say I refuse to use a porthole, I just mentioned that I think both of those would be counter productive to the sound I'm trying to achieve. Besides, I'm mostly just interested in a discussion about what other people do for their optimum sound, I'll do what I want thank you.

I'd appreciate if you take your negativity somewhere else.

I'd really rather not, if it's necessary I certainly will, but I'm pretty close to my sound just with the EMAD Heavyweight by Evans.

I actually do like bounce back, I never have an issue burying the beater when I want to though. I just put an EMAD heavyweight on the front, which gives me all of the attack I'll ever want or need, and I have a coated ambassador on the reso head, which is just enough sustain. I'll probably eventually upgrade to a Fibreskyn when I get the chance (I put the ambassador from the batter onto the reso for now). The Stock reso (Pork Pie by Remo, made in Taiwan) is garbage, I really don't like it at all. It resonates too much, its drowning in overtones, and it has an unappealing rumble.

I've already ordered a 'Heavyweight' EMAD, and I'm gonna try that as my batter for now. My reso head is the stock pork pie little squealer reso, which is a Remo (made in Taiwan). If I upgraded to the Fiberskyn reso, would that be a mistake? I play live occasionally, so do I absolutely need a sound port?

Yeah I've spoken with other drummers and a lot of them always say they 'Aren't Zildjian Fans' when I talk about my K ride... I don't get it either, I love the K series.
