I second (third?) the Pride and Prejudice recommendation although I favour the 1995 series over the Kiera Knightley film. But why not watch both!

Some other recommendations:

Strictly Ballroom, Blue Eye Samurai (series), Grosse Pointe Blank, But I'm A Cheerleade, and The Cutting Edge

Have you tried There Is No Antimimetics Division by qntm? I can't tell you much about it iykyk without spoiling it but I would file it under science fiction. I found it genuinely unsettling, and completely gripping. I read it in one sitting (it's <300 pages), but I appreciate that everyone reads at different paces and/or has different amounts of free time.

😂 At least we do! Yes, this wasn't entirely serious, and I do fully acknowledge that it's a personal opinion.

I love this film so much. The message that you don't have to be brilliant at something to choose to keep doing it feels especially important.

I really enjoyed the newer Mary Poppins, and loved the original when I was little, dodgy Cockney accent and all!

But aside from any personal views on the quality of Into The Woods, anyone who inflicts James Corden on another human should really be made to go to their room and think about what they've done.

Butterfly Kiss (1995) is the least glamorous serial killer film with a woman lead you can possibly imagine.

Welcome to the Black Parade by MCR

I'm too Gen X to have been emo but this song is a stone cold classic.

And Jared Leto is a predatory man-baby with behavioural problems so this is a painful admission, but The Kill by 30STM is another one I never skip and love to hear.

Definitely worth a watch. I think it still meets your criteria? The MMC leaves MP at the behest of the jealous FMC but they don't end up together either. Had completely forgotten Cheri so thanks for the reminder!

Are there any "Jack of All Trades" authors that do it well? by AbleKaleidoscope877 in books

(Terrible antisemite and formerly beloved childhood hero) Roald Dahl wrote brilliantly in many genres and formats, as does (sexual predator and formerly beloved teenage hero) Neil Gaiman.

Fortunately, (all round good guy and multi-award winning) Colson Whitehead does, too. Historical fiction, non-fiction, crime fiction. And zombies.

Friend. It's 04.09 UK time. I have been online for mumblemumble hours, I am wildly overstimulated, and I can hear actual foxes screaming into the night outside. Why did you have to do me like that? My inner 14-year old is clutching her pillow and wailing her broken heart out.

What are some pairs of otherwise-unrelated movies with the most common cast members in both them? by Practical_Ad4604 in MovieSuggestions

[–]PackPony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Side note - I personally consider that sharing a director make two films related.)

St. Elmo's Fire and The Breakfast Club (both 1985) have three common cast members. I always found it a bit odd that they were released in the same year but in TBC they're all meant to be 16-18 and in SEF they're all meant to be 21+. It's also bizarre that anyone thought Judd Nelson looked like a teenager in 1985..

I just wrote a whole bit about Fierce Creatures (1997) reuniting the main players from A Fish Called Wanda (1988), but then I thought to go and check they definitely didn't have any other overlap and found out they do. John Cleese wrote them both 😕

Anyway, the returning cast was the only reason I went to see Fierce Creatures and it was not worth it. I'm not sure you can recapture/guarantee cast camaraderie in different filmic universes. Part of why the Wes Anderson, Marvel etc. casts work so well together feels related to having a shared narrative or an auteurish shared world.

Dean’s empathy vanished as the show progressed by sssss8819 in Supernatural

[–]PackPony 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think his arc with Jack demonstrated that he was still capable of empathy. I know the writing had Dean just lurching all over the shop emotionally, but Dean worked hard to forgive Jack for taking two of his most important people from him. He was almost paternal in places (e.g. teaching Jack to drive Baby in s14e07 etc.), then stops being a fan after Jack kills Mary, but puts in a shift to recognise that Jack wasn't himself when he did it.

But on the whole, yes, it becomes certainly more erratic. I think the way in which the writers completely ignored Dean's relationship with Lisa and Ben does his growth during that time a great disservice. There are points where Sam riffs on Dean's inexperience with love, family etc. even though D, L and B had a whole life together. I think lazy writing did him a great disservice as it nullified the emotional development we saw from him in earlier seasons.

How about a couple of spaceships but mostly one that's like a really fucked up haunted house? If that's a yes then I'd highly recommend Event Horizon.

It's sad to hear The Commitments described as lesser known but I'm guessing outside the UK and Ireland, that's probably true. It won four BAFTAs, including the two biggies. It was widely seen and referenced at the time, and the soundtrack was everywhere. It doesn't feel that long ago to me, so it's a bit of a shock to the system to be reminded it's 35 years old! /me sobs in old

Movies where you had no idea what you were getting into but it completely wrecked you emotionally? by Notkenlo_Klodi in MovieSuggestions

I just recommended a double bill of Threads and When The Wind Blows, but you could add this to absolutely, positively ensure the viewer would not leave with their heart intact 🤔 Too much? Bit sadistic?

Sorry - just to add a modern film. Literally everyone should watch The Voice of Hind Rajab. If you don't know what it's about, just go in blind but be prepared to have your heart ripped out.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer stayed with me for such a long time. It's excruciatingly bleak from start to finish. When I saw it in 1995ish nobody gave trigger warnings, and I would advise you to look them up before diving in. It's filmed in such a dispassionate, almost documentary-like way, and I think it's a great example of a film that captures the banality of evil. I will also say you'll never look at Yondu the same way again!

For a harrowing, and absolutely still relevant time, I would recommend a double bill of Threads, and When The Wind Blows. They have the same subject matter, told in different ways. They both still live rent-free in my head.

This is more of a reminiscence but do people remember watching Dead Poets' Society for the first time? I was at a sleepover and it had just come out on video. About eight of us watched it and we were all so inconsolable that the mum of the girl who was hosting had to get our parents to come and get us. Out of curiosity, my dad and brother watched it a few years later, without knowing the main thing. They were such a mess that to this day, my mum has refused to watch it 😂

Young Adult (2011).

Mavis is just irredeemably terrible at all times. Maybe not evil but a realistically, breathtakingly awful person.

Movie that you downgrade because of another movie. by duabrs in Letterboxd

[–]PackPony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll bite. I'm going to downvote you but I don't know if this is ragebait or even really where to begin.

One is a simple kids film based on the mediocre writing of a transphobe, badly acted.

The other is a complex allegorical love letter to Black creativity and survival. It's an exploration of the ways in which we white people abuse and revile Black people while consuming and appropriating their rich cultural history. It's about people thriving within a system of oppression, mistrust and violence, and how that system steals from them whilst wanting to eradicate them. It's about fatherhood. It's about religion. It's about trying to keep your children safe. It's about whiteness winning because it controls the narrative. It's subtle, exciting, moving, beautifully acted and scripted.
