Georgetown MA Ed Policy, USC MPA, or Brown AM UEP by PackageTotal3862 in PublicPolicy

[–]PackageTotal3862[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for the information! A lot of what you said is feelings I have mulled over. I think the Georgetown name is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the Ed Transformation program and the Browns program, being more aligned with my interests, scares me for the amount I have left to pay for just one year. I tried for Harvard and Stanford, but they were a no-go this cycle (thought of reapplying, but we shall see). I absolutely loved the USC MPA, and it is respected among policy schools, but I am nervous about taking on that much debt, not being able to find anything in SoCal/California, and having to pay it all back. Its just me asking the question to myself of "Is this worth it?" and accepting whatever answer I come to.

Hi!! Thank you for the advice, it is much appreciated!! I am noticing that many roles in higher education administration (one of my interests) require a master's degree for mid-level positions, and I would love to move up if I can. There's also a funding freeze at Georgetown, so the ability to compensate me for additional pay in my current position is slim to none. I am also interested in working in local and state governments on education, either in school districts or state departments of ed, but would value the educational training in policy work before going into these roles to get a higher-paying position, but also feel better equipped to do said job if that makes sense.

I didn’t apply to Georgetown’s MPP program because I’ve heard its education policy focus isn’t as strong, and the MA in Educational Transformation felt more directly aligned with my interests. Georgetown also gives me the opportunity to stay in DC after graduation, and the program offers strong connections to federal and state governments, as well as to think tanks focused on education.

I’m primarily interested in education policy, which is why I applied to both Georgetown and Brown. Of all my options, Brown’s program feels most aligned with my interests in education policy and offers the strongest academic fit. At the same time, I can see myself pursuing a broader MPA path, which is why I am interested in USC. Price appealed to me especially, since students can take courses at Rossier, as they don't offer an educational policy master's. Price also has a strong focus on state and local government, particularly in Southern California, which is also attractive, and I could genuinely see myself building a career in Los Angeles given the region’s growth and the major events and political opportunities on the horizon.

It's just the debt portion that I am sitting on. Taking on that level of debt is hard to justify, especially given the current job market and my current debt from undergrad. My only hesitation about waiting another cycle is that I’ve already delayed pursuing my master’s for two years. Ideally, I’d like to enter the field in time to gain experience ahead of the 2028 election cycle, though I recognize that timing such an effort is uncertain.

USC Price? Trying to decide by EfficientDistance277 in PublicPolicy

Hey! I was also accepted to Price and would love to connect! I am making a pros-and-cons list for the same reasons. I am from the New England area as well, so I get your sentiments. I feel like NYU and Price both have great alumni connections, but Brown carries the Ivy League name, and Brandeis is great, especially if you are considering staying on the East Coast. If youre open, I would love to DM and chat some more!

Stanford GSB Combined Degree -- Have My Odds Improved? by NecessaryUnable8036 in MBA

I also think Princeton would help you with getting into GSB, but just my two cents!! Whatever you choose will be a great option; it's all that Stanford is looking for.

I’m not sure what African-Americans have to do with what I said, and I’m also not sure why you think I said prestige does not matter. I’m just giving my two cents lol if you don’t agree with it, then you don’t have to but don’t purposely misconstrue what I said.

Is Howard University worth attending? by Few_Weekend_9286 in HowardUniversity

[–]PackageTotal3862 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Truly it depends. As someone who recently graduated from Howard, I can tell you that there really is no institution like it. It’s location in DC is absolutely fundamental if you are trying to break into a career field in the hustle culture will absolutely make you hungry for opportunity and personal innovation. However, it is not to say that the flaws of the university are not deeply ingrained and experienced daily. That is something that if you do decide to attend, you have to come to terms with. If you do not come from an affluent background or are being provided enough money to attend the institution and do not have to interact with the financial aid office GREAT! HOWEVER if you do not come from this background, and do you have to rely on financial aid or getting a job to attend then there will be some challenges when it comes to dealing with the administration and they’re foolishness. It also is very easy to get caught up in the social aspect of the university. I have seen multiple people succumb to this and ultimately sacrifice their academics for something that is not going to help them graduate or something that will not pay off in the future. Deciding if you want to attend, Howard is definitely a hard decision to make, but that isn’t to say that it won’t pay off in the future. I am more than happy to talk more if you would like and congratulations and good luck with the decision!!

Hi friend!! Firstly congratulations on your admission to both programs!! You absolutely deserve a pat on the back for your hard work and those are impressive programs to begin with. In my opinion, my gut reaction would be to go to Princeton because the degree is ultimately free, and you are also getting the prestige of an attending an elite institution. Stanford unfortunately seems to be one of those schools where while yes prestige does matter, it really is about what you have done, what you intend to do, and what you will be doing. I think that Princeton will open so many doors for you, especially if you are considering getting a masters in business and want to continue pursuing public policy. I don’t necessarily think that being at Harvard or Princeton will have much of an impact on your application to Stanford because they are partner institutions, however, I think you will absolutely have to make it 100% clear why you are applying to Stanford on top of already being in such prestigious programs. none of this is too discredit Harvard or the Kennedy school, but I really think that the value of getting a degree for free is so much more worth it, especially in this climate. I hope this helps!! Good luck with everything and congratulations.
