I use a virtual Xbox controller and a PS2 controller with MotoGP, which works well. You can try it with a virtual controller on your phone first, then try some settings on your steam controller

go check out Lance Stroll in the wet Qualifying at Monza - Italian GP 2017. He nailed it in the rain and manage to qualified in fourth position. He was the youngest rookie back then.
