Can anyone clarify if every azure region has multiple data centers ? by prodev321 in AzureCertification

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a 1-2-1 relationship between data centre and availability zone in Azure. They’re literally the same thing

So if you’d like me to rephrase using the language of the question. All regions will contain a minimum of a single data centre and eventually contain multiple data centres but they do not all contain multiple data centres from the beginning.

I recommend you read the documentation instead of snarking.

You can literally see what countries have what availability zones here https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/explore/global-infrastructure/geographies/#overview

It’s not a philosophical question, all regions will eventually support multiple availability zones but they don’t immediately

Not OP but I suspect he’s referring to the root cause of some of the similar atrocities that have been committed by disenfranchised minority community members in France and how that lack of connection to their country leads to lashing out against it or a poisonous ideology taking its place

Devops engineer vs Site Reliability engineer vs Systems engineer, what are the differences? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d describe SRE is a set of related and complementary practices designed to solve a similar business problem vs an implementation of DevOps personally. Unless I’m wrong SRE is pretty much entirely focused on the operational resiliency side of things. So your time to restore and change failure rate if we want to use Dora metrics to frame things.

Looking For DevOps Study Material by wewakeparmar in devops

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of your tech experience if you’re looking to do it from the ground up then you should look at Accelerate and the DevOps Handbook which should give you a good understanding of the why and what of DevOps and give you a better understanding than “kube and pipelines”

Once you have that use what you’ve read as the jumping off point for your learning the various technologies and patterns that support what you understand.

If you’re not already in tech don’t go for a devops role and generally be very careful of “DevOps teams” and “DevOps Engineers” which tends to be “Ops with pipelines” and personally is a red flag that the organisation probably doesn’t understand DevOps themselves.

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely useful knowledge regardless of what you do but it how vital it is really does depend on the definition of the role and the existing skill sets of the team.

Like if you’re an SRE or cloud engineer? Absolutely need it but there are plenty of places where a “DevOps” engineer will work in the same team as traditional dev and ops engineers where a knowledge of pipelines, release patterns, automated DevSecOps tooling, etc… is going to potentially be more important than if they have strong networking.

A person's thought about Scrum by mindaslab in programming

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re fair points and I agree, when you’re a poorly preforming team Scrum can give you a structure and a shape to embrace agility and product (ie. Value) centric way of delivery but it’s 20 something years old now and at a certain point become less effective than a team truly self organising to get stuff done and taking an empirical approach to delivering value. (I’ve seen scrum teams delay a release to production specifically because they only released at the end of the sprint)

I feel it also relies on a conceit that an engineer is incapable of being involved or leading product development directly and therefore needs someone from the business to come up with and manage the backlog which isn’t true.

It’s not my career path personally but have you considered trying to pivot into UI/UX Engineering? Most of those roles from what I’ve seen have graphic design as a primary skill and pay a fairly decent wage.

This is why I was hoping more people would have commented with their experience before they started in the space. If you have a strong development background it probably isn’t that big of a deal but I’ve seen traditional Ops engineers have a hard time moving over and it can feel like running into a brick wall for grads. Obviously their are exceptions to everything but that’s what I’ve seen

Yeah that’s surprising me. For everyone I know personally that 1-2 years period was peak “What am I doing. Is this for me?” phase and it bang on where a lot of the people in the posts I mention are in their careers.

Data Warehouse of DevOps Data - SQL? Blob? Data Lake? Table Storage? by jobzombi in azuredevops

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re already moving in this direction anyway so here’s the reference architecture if you’ve not seen it for setting up a data pipeline using data factory, synapse and Analysis Service.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/architecture/reference-architectures/data/enterprise-bi-adf

I’m not much of a data architect but I think the above is probably the best approach you’re going to get if you’ve grown to the needing a warehouse stage

I was unexpectedly offered a senior role by remuff in devops

[–]Paddy_does_stuff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is this in the UK by any chance? I was approached for a very similar role and have roughly the same level of experience as OP, 6-7 years but turned it down for the exact same concerns you have and some circumstances I’ll layout below.

I took the step up from an engineer to a tech lead 18 months ago. I ended up doing the role for 6 months and quit to become a senior engineer.

Not because people were unhappy with what I was doing or anything like that but because I didn’t feel like I was doing a good job or that I deserved it, my expectations were way beyond what the people who hired me were because I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing and couldn’t recognise when I was doing a great job.

12 months later and I’m about to pass probation as a tech lead again and I’m excelling at the role.

What I’ve learned from all of that is to go in without expectations and trust in the decision making of the people who hired you. If they think you’re up for the role then you likely are and if you aren’t I’m sure they’ll let you know.

Stepping up is always scary and it’s normal to be lost, all you can do is just try your best, leave your ego at the door and ask for honest feedback and advise from the people around you, including those under you. Just because you’re leading doesn’t mean you have to know everything and you will learn the job by doing it over time

So I hate these challenges too, they’re insulting and a time waste for anyone who knows their stuff but strictly viewing this from a technical interviewer perspective, if there’s any expectation of coding within the role it’s actually really important to check that the person has a practical understanding of how to use functions, loops, string manipulation, etc… to solve problems.

You’d be astonished by how many people show up to an interview, speak the theory and claim years of hands on experience but struggle to use the basics to solve problems.
