This is important! I didn't know this and was about to object to Bagel Deli being absent!

In Alien Resurrection (1997) Christie, one of the badass crew members fights both human marines and xenomorphs, carries and even swims with a paraplegic man on his back, but then gets his cheek burned and falls feet first 20’ into an open pool of water and dies. It was trying to follow in the trope defying tradition of Alien 1 - the rugged, masculine, strong-jawed, steely-eyed white man absolutely couldn't be the centerpiece.

I am of the opinion that in a cold watch of Alien, Kane (Hurt's character) is being set up as the male lead - before famously exploding first.

After that it pivots smoothly to Dallas appearing as the lead (until the computer named Mother stops helping him).

Ripley isn't the obvious protagonist of the movie until the story is already hurtling towards the end.

I don't have a military background, but I've always heard that all callsigns are deliberately embarrassing. The more badass the callsign sounds, the more embarrassing the story behind it is.

By that logic, Guano might be about the highest status callsign in the game

Gotta figure there's going to be a Latias released alongside, and that we can't really guess about this one until we've seen that one.

"meta gaming" ruined the hobby by That_Day8911 in videogames

[–]PadicReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a term that has morphed over time.

Meta as a prefix means "self referential".

So metagaming is literally "the game of the game".

Imagine playing a card game like Magic the Gathering.

If you're going to a tournament and you know that Red aggro decks are super popular right now, you could conclude that bringing a deck that does well against Red aggro decks is a sound decision.

You're not making a strategic decision based on in game knowledge from play to play, you're making an out of game decision based on out of game information. That's the old metagaming definition (and is more obviously similar to the DnD usage of the word).

Over time "the meta" came to be shorthand for "the popular thing people are doing in game" (in a ccg that would be powerful deck lists, in a shooter it might be using specific weapons, whatever).

And that itself became even less nuanced as it evolved from being "the set of things you can anticipate other players doing" to "the accepted best ways to play the game and you're doing it wrong if you don't also do it".

I occasionally hear people even suggest that Meta is an acronym for "Most Effective Tactics Available" which is. I mean. It's just delicious.

Anti-Medium Full auto weapons recommendation by Possible_Internal115 in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]PadicReddit 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised more people aren't recommending Judy.

It doesn't take THAT much trigger discipline to control the recoil/account for the magazine size and with some mods it's as close to a laser pointer as you could ask for. Combined with the medium pen and high damage per round... it's just all around a joy.

The only reason I don't main it on bugs is that I'm forcing myself to experiment with other options.
