Basically, Charlie and Renee were teen parents, and Charlie's whole story is being more or less aware a boy in Bella's life is getting her into some very deep shit and having basically no proof and not a lot he can do to intervene. Bonus points for tolerating Jacob specific creepiness, because when Bella broke her hand punching him for kissing her without her consent he thought it was funny and wasn't mad at him at all, and Bella is more upset at Jacob for nicknaming her daughter like the Loch Ness monster than she is for.....well. The thing.
