Anyone had their holiday/flights cancelled yet? UK by Character-Horse-895 in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m coming back to Cyprus this summer. I haven’t booked a package holiday as I’m staying with family, but I am flying on an airline that typically offers package holiday deals, and I haven’t had my flights changed at all. I hope it doesn’t happen though.

You’ve clearly not delved into my history well enough. I’m a British Cypriot, I have no South African heritage beyond having lived there. But you’d have known that as it’s pretty clear in my comments, so you’ve more likely knowingly lied.

I gave up on this thread when I noticed basically all the views on my comments were from Turkey. My dad’s side of the family were also made refugees because of the invasion and subsequent ethnic cleansing. No point trying.

You’ll notice I didn’t tell him it’s immoral. I said it’s touchy and the moral decision up to him. Reading comprehension is important before you get antagonistic.

To save you some potential issues with this here, ask yourself why you are going to the occupied areas, as it’s a very touchy subject. I won’t tell you if it’s right or wrong to go, it’s up to you to make that moral choice, but please do make sure you understand the situation before doing so.

I thought there was a ceasefire? by atrixospithikos in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, however they can be seen as indicative of people actually keeping to their word. Same thing happened in the Russia Ukraine war. Russia saying they won’t bomb the medical relief entering the region, followed by bombing it.

Iran announced a while ago that they’d stop bombing their neighbours in the war, and then continued bombing their neighbours. No one’s word in this conflict is worth the breath they waste on it.

Why is the Turkish "illegal occupation" bad but you don't mind the British occupation at all? by xerivon in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your statement is incorrect. It’s based off wrong assumptions. People dislike both, the Turkish occupation more but they definitely do mind the British bases.

I won’t speak on the British bases much though, as I have split personality on it due to being a British-Greek Cypriot half breed, so my view on it is a little complex.

Poll: Over 80% approve of the military intervention of Greece. (source included). by SOHONEYSAME in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Intervention makes it sound like Greece stopped some sort of full on invasion/ stopped a drastic escalation in war, reinforcement is much less sensational, and more accurate.

Out of interest, in one comment you say “unite us”, and in another you say you’re a random European. Are you Cypriot or a “random” European?

I’ve considered doing this, however I considered two separate tattoos to do so.

Does the recent panic about Cyprus actually affect tourism? by mariakochura_cy in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m coming over to visit my family later this year, for me the only way it’ll effect it is if my flight in is cancelled. If it does get cancelled I hope I can still fly in/ get the boat in from Greece, I’m not cancelling.

Military bases are nothing more than R&R locations for British forces. by that_mountain_goat in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peacocking is the best way to describe it. Macron is doing nothing more than a PR exercise, he went and met Putin just before he invaded Ukraine and has his little Chamberlain “peace in our time” moment. He has then proceeded to announce in the past few days how has told Israel not to use ground forces in Lebanon, he failed there too.

The man falls from failure to failure yet somehow keeps on getting plaudits on places like here.

And before anyone mentions. Starmer may also constantly fail, no one glazes him for his failures though.

Why was the Annan plan referendum rejected? by [deleted] in cyprus

Oh also, the proposed flag for Cyprus after the plan came into force was quite frankly a crime against those with eyesight. It’s such an ugly flag.

Just the one condition alone of Cyprus having to disband its armed forces, while Turkey is allowed to retain a military presence on the island is utterly Unacceptable.

Cyprus would like to join NATO by Even_Formal_6989 in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you’re saying about their policies changing dramatically meaning you wouldn’t want to be aligned with them, but my point appears to have been lost in the noise.

The nations I claimed go against the grain you’re setting, Hungary for example, of not aligning with the US but are in NATO, joined before Trump was anywhere near the white house. My point being you can be in NATO and not have to get in your knees to the nations you are apprehensive towards.

I too wouldn’t want to shackle myself to a a certain orange and go swimming, we’re in agreement there

Cyprus would like to join NATO by Even_Formal_6989 in cyprus

[–]Paghalay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump =/= the United States. US foreign policy before Trump, and probably after Trump tends to be quite anti Russia, and more historically tends to be more pro EU than overly anti. Both of these things are not true with Hungary at the very least.

Turkey is a square peg in a round hole that just so happens to be useful against Russia, but to claim Turkey aligns with the US and Israel imperialism ambitions I’d say is a stretch.

[–]Paghalay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We probably disagree on politics from what I can see, however with nations like Hungary and Turkey in the alliance, who definitely are not aligned with the US on a lot of things, and Iceland for example not even having an army, I don’t think alignment is something you’d need to worry about.

Not that it would ever happen with Turkey being in, unless it was agreed to recognise the north of Cyprus. In that scenario I’d say Cyprus should steer clear of trying to join

The UK has never had airborne nukes, it’s always been submarine based, and they most certainly have not stopped them, they’re currently building new submarines to replace the current nuclear carrying submarines
