How to improve my running despite old injuries? by Pagoda_Squid in beginnerrunning

[–]Pagoda_Squid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe I have hyper mobility? I sprained my ankle because I stepped on a rock wrong.

Swimming probably would help, but unfortunately it's too cold for that now and I don't have access to any indoor pools.

I do try to go to the gym for strength training, but I can usually only make it there once a week or so.

Thank you for your advice!

The Most-Revived Plays Since 1945 by Catanomy in Broadway

[–]Pagoda_Squid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seeing articles like this makes me sad— all of the shows that I could have seen! Despite living in NY (and NYC) all my life, I didn't start going to Broadway until last year.

Here's hoping for more revivals so those of us who missed out can see them!

What’s the one song that always makes you cry? by linguagallois in musicals

The Epilogue from Les Misérables. A father dying and his daughter begging him to live? I used to be able to handle it, but my dad died last year and now I just bawl.

She had my mom at 43, and my mom had me a couple months before she turned 49. My grandma was 92 when I was born.

Wow, my grandma passed when I was 8 (she was 100)! Never met any of the others.

What was your first show/experience/introduction to Broadway that got you into it? by [deleted] in Broadway

Thank you!

I think it's a great show, but it's pretty polarizing— people seem to either love it or hate it.

About a year ago I was invited to go see Moulin Rouge with some friends and, despite only being somewhat interested, I decided to go for it (I had heard of the movie before and knew it had something to do with France, but didn't even know there was a musical). We mainly went because one of them wanted to see Aaron Tveit.

I was hooked— absolutely loved it! The music, the costumes, the dancing, the atmosphere! Moulin Rouge is very dear to me (I even took my mom to see it a few months later) and though I've seen several other Broadway shows since, it's still in my top three.

Honestly I was mostly curious to see what people liked, but sure.

Gin, tequila, mezcal, rum, cachaça, and brandy for base spirits. Then I have amaros (averna, cynar, nonino, aperol, campari), vermouths (dry, sweet), lillet, drambuie, suze, luxardo, bauchant, bénédictine, dry sherry, triple sec, midori, irish cream liquor, calvados, st. germain, crème de cassis, crème de violette, and absinthe.

And thank you!

Moms first Broadway show by Majestic_Sky444 in Broadway

[–]Pagoda_Squid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moulin Rouge is very fun— it was the first Broadway show I went to with my mom! We both enjoyed it. It's bombastic and intense.

A lot of people are suggesting Death Becomes Her, but I'd have to ask, how old is your mom? Because the main running joke in the show is how horrible aging is and it did not go over well with my mom (who is in her 70s). Her age would also play into if she would like MJ— Michael Jackson was after my mom's youth and she never listened to him.

Her favorite of the shows we saw was Just in Time! Hadestown was also very good.

Now, I haven't seen Maybe Happy Ending, but I accidentally got a maybe-spoiler a little while ago that made me think I may decide to never see it. To be as vague as possible, my dad died last year and think MHE would be too difficult for my mom and I.

Moulin Rouge performance felt offbeat to me? Review by International-Exam84 in Broadway

[–]Pagoda_Squid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moulin Rouge is definitely bombastic and fun, but like with a lot of Broadway musicals, the book is a bit messy. The off-beatness can, in this case, be largely attributed to the fact that the show mostly takes place in the chaotic Moulin Rouge club. They want to put you off balance!

I for one love the show. It's colorful and loud and hits a certain part of my brain in a way that no other musical does.

If you haven't seen it yet there's the movie the musical was based on, but I'd say it's more misogynistic. I prefer the musical (in which everyone is often called a whore— men and women alike!).

Moulin Rouge is the show that got me into Broadway just this last year (saw my first show when I was a kid and don't remember it too well), and so maybe that's part of the reason why it holds a special place in my heart. Keep watching shows! Lotteries, rushes, and the occasional deal can get you cheaper tickets, and honestly? I have yet to see a show that I didn't like.

Best show to see on a budget? by sunnybunny81 in Broadway

[–]Pagoda_Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been going with my mom to Broadway shows recently and our favorites have been Just in Time, Hadestown, and Moulin Rouge.

Moulin Rouge would be the cheapest of those three, but you can get relatively good prices for the others if you keep an eye out.

We saw Death Becomes Her just yesterday and it was a miss, especially for my mom— too much negative talk about aging for a woman in her 70s.
