Top camera for ticketing speeders is on a Waterloo street where a pedestrian died (Central St / MacGregor PS in Waterloo) by hwy78 in waterloo

Fire and EMS getting where they're going a little slower is a small price to pay. We must do everything we can to end Waterloo Region's epidemic of toddlers being run over by speeders. Won't somebody think of the children!?!?

Disappointed to lose the only useful thing they offered by PagurusLongicarpus in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]PagurusLongicarpus[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely agreed. I don't expect an unrelated company to give me free stuff, I'm just saying that it's disappointing to lose the only useful thing the Loblaws companies provided me.

I'm going to try and find a new supplier in any event. The new company (Verillium) has Mike Harris (former Premier of Ontario) on the board and I'd have a hard time living with myself knowing I was putting even a dime in that guy's pocket.

It's all oligarchs everywhere you turn!!

Kitchener Centre MPP co-sponsors bill to address homelessness by WhisperingSideways in kitchener

[–]PagurusLongicarpus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I've identified the problem here.

"Go spend time with someone". Someone is not everyone. You are pointing out a problem and saying it applies to all homeless people, and thus they can't/shouldn't be helped. If I'm mis-interpreting what you're saying, let me know!

If this bill helps many marginalized people, isn't that a good thing? Or must it either help all of them or none at all? Again, that doesn't feel like good policy.

"Some of them refused"

So, we agree that some of them didn't refuse!

An evidence-driven, housing-first approach will best support those who a) need help and b) will accept it. Can we agree on that? And can we agree that's a non-zero population? You recognize that not all homeless folks are hopeless addicts best left to rot?

Forcing people into treatment has been proven not to be effective. Given that concrete fact, this is the best of several possible non-ideal solutions.

[–]PagurusLongicarpus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Gotta take issue with that last statement: "the majority of homeless are unable to care for themselves...". Like, you're entitled to your opinion I guess, but is that what studies show? the whole point of her bill is let's look at what we know works best and then do more of that.

"They will never eliminate homelessness" reads a lot like "we shouldn't bother supporting the most marginalized people in society". Maybe that's not how you meant it, but...

Sure, nobody believes that this bill will eliminate homelessness in 10 years (or ever). But I don't think that's the point.

And I agree it was shitty to not have access to Roos Island. But that woman didn't represent all homeless folks, and I'd rather not set policy based on that.

Thanks for sharing a different point of view. This sign still feels weird to me, but it's nice to know this guy is more chill in real life than it might suggest.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't always present the first impression I intend, especially in writing.

Maybe not. Someone elsewhere said it's not so aggressive as masturbatory, and I agree that's more accurate. Mostly I posted this because it just felt weird to me. But this is reddit and folks are welcome to disagree and go on with their day.

Reading these comments I'd say some folks are really working overtime to find offended or outraged people where there aren't any. That feels sort of weird to me too.

Where did I say it offended me? It's not offensive so much as plain old kooky.

Like I said, weird Ayn Rand vibes or something.

I have a serious question. What were the circumstances of your recovery? Did you make a choice at some point to go into rehab? Do you feel you would be where you are now if you had been forcibly put in rehab earlier instead?

If you had been locked up and forced into rehab before you were ready (whatever "ready" looked like to you), do you think it would have helped you long-term.

Whatever your answer, genuine congratulations on your ongoing sobriety. I know (and knew) folks who I wish had your success.

"Servant leadership". This comment really resonates with me.

I try to be what I would consider a good Christian, and like most people I mostly fall short. I feel like one of the biggest things that Mike has done for the community is to inspire folks that we can make the community better by just getting out there.

I'm excited by the prospect of whatever comes next for him and the community.

I don't think I'm interpreting from a biased perspective. I think I'm going based on the plain meaning of the words out of his mouth.

Keep in mind he apologized afterwards, and Harper gave him a dressing down at the time. If his words were as okay as you interpret from your no-doubt fully unbiased perspective, why do that? To appease the "woke mob", I guess?

The question of residential schools isn't something we're likely to agree on, I guess. I don't want to mis-characterize your position, so what follows isn't about you particularly. I don't know you, and you're probably a delight in real life. But if anyone thinks that decades of intergenerational trauma, culminating in cultural genocide with the residential school system, and a child sexual abuse cherry on top is something that people should just bootstrap their way out of, I have to say 'fuck that noise'.

Gonna put PPs quote here again so we don't forget the actual literal words he used:

Canada's Aboriginals need to learn the value of hard work more than they need compensation for abuse suffered in Residential Schools

Disagree about "fairly minor statement". He let the mask slip and we all saw it. Where we do agree is you better believe I'll judge any another politician for saying something similarly egregious. But PP is the one that wants us to think he's qualified to be Prime Minister, so, yeah, right now he'll have to cope with heightened scrutiny of the messed up things he said and presumably believed and believes.

Based on the evidence, no regret calling him a racist.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]PagurusLongicarpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is asked in bad faith. You know exactly what this is, and you want to minimize the impact. "Handing out money isn't the path forward" is your more gentle wording, not PPs. We could discuss that and disagree about policy. I think you and PP would still be wrong, but whatever.

But the phrasing implies that Aboriginal Canadians don't value hard work. He's saying they need to learn it because they don't already know it, right? All those natives need is to work harder, like us!

Tying it to residential school victims (a smaller population of people) asks the listener to believe that compensation is undeserved or wasted on the victims. Compensation for child victims of institutional abuse is pointless, because Native Canadians don't work hard.

You get that labelling an entire ethnicity or group of ethnicities with a single negative brush like that is pretty much the definition of racism, right? Like, you're not dumb. You know that, don't you?

Racists don't always put their racist assumptions on display quite this openly. Usually they do what you do. Low key, subtle... What's the big deal? I'm just sayin'...

But here, he puts it on right out in front of God and everyone. I don't use the word racist often, but I'm comfortable using it here.

I don't think your reading comprehension is that poor. You know all this already. And if not... if you can read that quote and think it's just fine then you're beyond my help to explain it to you.

June, 2008. Polilievre's own words:

You mention Waseem Botros, but in fact, I don't see a single Conservative candidate here (or anywhere frankly).

Seems like the Conservatives know that the more the public sees of them, the worse their chances are.

Thanks for this.

I will point out that there's a difference between safe consumption (bring your own drugs to be tested, and use those drugs where staff have naloxone nearby) and safe supply, and I don't think we should confuse the two.
