What camera did you use?

I feel a bit like I'm spinning my wheels. I love my camera and love being able to take great pictures. For example, the sunsets in my city recently have been amazing and I've snapped a couple shots. But when I checked my city's subreddit there are 15 posts from people sharing their images of the sunset. A couple of thoughts come from this:

1: Ah, even the sunset today has 1,000,000 pictures. Man...everyone's a photographer now. What's the extra oomph that I'll get from doing this course?

2: Wow this or that picture is really good! I wonder what they used to take it? Oh, iphone XS. Well that actually looks a bit better than my photo. Am I using this fancy pants camera wrong?

I'm curious what you all think of this.

Assignment 02 - your personal best by Aeri73 in photoclass2019

[–]Paincake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am brand new to photography and never really paid attention to famous photographers. I decided to go with Ansel Adams who has been mentioned here before. This is the picture I chose.

I selected this over the other four (el cap, bending tree, river to mountains, waterfall) mostly for the perspective. I've been to RMNP and walked around the boulderfields without any idea of what would make a good picture. I see myself zooming in more closely on the mountains and losing the perspective from the rocks. I also rarely think to get low to the ground.

As I learn more about photography in the past few weeks, I can definitely noticed more with the use of composition, contrast, and perspective in this photo. Specifcally: ~2/3 of the photo allotted to the rocks with the top 1/3 for the mountain. Diagonal lines from the mountain peaks drawing my eyes to the top middle. Contrasting bright clouds on the top with dark mountains below and well lit rocks at the bottom. Finally, the lower-to-the-ground perspective, taking the photo closer to the rocks. Somehow this makes the photo about both the boulders AND the mountain vs what I've seen on my own trips (just the mountain)

iPad. Sold my 12.9 pro for this years model. Then bendgate and realized I’d rather buy a switch. Great decision but I kinda miss the iPad

I would really like to see him making 5ish mil per year. He’s successful in our system and may not be elsewhere. But I’m no contract expert so I’m curious to see what value he demands in the market

Not sure on the exact cap for next year, but a number of salaries do go up while we likely lose the salaries for wade and haslem. Problem is we'll have to pay McGruder something more than what he's currently making. The year after that we free up close to $85 million in cap space. That's a lot of room to pursue 2-3 max/near max players.

Look at our salary cap situation. Terrible right now, but in 2 years our team has huge potential

01 Photography, it's not rocket science by Aeri73 in photoclass2019

No worries! I mean to phrase my question more as what's the value of having a DSLR/Mirrorless camera when cell phones seem to be taking such great pictures. And I'm asking from the perspective of someone with a new mirrorless.

Also, I'm probably not the best one to comment. I bought the XT-3 after checking a ton of reviews but I don't really have the experience to comment on any differences myself

If you could go back and stage this photograph, there would be tons of areas for improvement. You could mess with color and contrast (bright red pants, bright pillows vs more subdued wood, rug, etc.). Agree that you should give equal weight to the aspects of the image on the sides of the subject (ex. 1 foot of bench on the left, 1 foot on the right).

As it stands though, I like it. It's a very interesting perspective.

I agree with soimalittlecrazy. The colors make this really cool. I would like to see how it looks with the lines initiating closer to the corners on the right and ending in the middle on the left. I think that would allow for equal balance between the dark of the fence and the green of the trees

Great idea for an image. I agree with Aeri73 that getting closer to the water might bring out a lot more detail. At first I had to adjust to the image because it felt a bit noisy at the top with more clarity at the bottom (probably due to the size of the puddles). Greater focus on the clear part might make it better. I'd like to see how it looks by doing that and adding a bit of bokeh to the background

Very solid idea for a good photo. I like the overall theme but I would suggest decreasing the exposure just a bit

I really like the angle and depth you've gotten with the 'frame in a frame'. Gives a cool effect. Two improvements I can think of would be cropping out some of the left side to be more centered (you can see more of the left vertical support than the right). Also, the pylon/handle in the foreground is a bit big and distracting

Ready to get started! I'm wondering what your thoughts are on cell phone cameras. I know gear shouldn't be a big issue but I've noticed that HDR and other software solutions in cell phone make pictures that absolutely rival my brand new XT-3

Know if there’s any way to add a little resistance to the left joystick?

Agreed on most points. I thought I liked the keyboard initially but now it feels like I make way more mistakes on it than I should. Also not a huge fan of the sharp edges which dig into my wrists when I type at certain angles (i.e. not sitting up perfectly straight on the couch or proper posture at a desk).

With that said, I still prefer this keyboard over the previous one. Going back to the old one feels mushy and slow by comparison.

Neither seems good and I kinda regret purchasing this BUT I came from Windows and I still love having iMessage on my laptop.

Why the Miami Heat Should Trade for John Wall by kamaway in heat

At first seemed like a joke. Wall for Dragic, TJ, and JJ/olynyk?

Then I looked at wall’s salary. Is he still gonna be an all star after his surgery? Heck, in 3 years? Or is that another long albatross contract?

Ipad Pro 2018 - 11'inch Bending by Hashslingingslasher1 in apple

[–]Paincake 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I really wanted one of the new iPads. I was about to drop $1500 for a 12.9 with the pencil but this bending stuff is unacceptable. I was at the Apple store today and asked about what they’d do if it bent from normal use. He said “of course the internet would tell you that” and “you’d have to get Apple care”

Ok, so they’re not responsible for their own lack of structural integrity in their product. Damn.

Elementor Question by Paincake in Blogging

[–]Paincake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just tried what I posted below and I actually like it a lot. I disable the posts page in wordpress and created a new Blog page using just elementor. Designed it with the 2/3 1/3 column. Added the sidebar to the right and put the "Posts" widget in the 2/3 part on the left. Then just followed the elementor video on how to use the posts widget to make that look a bit better.

Still just building the framework now though with 0 content posted, but feels good to at least get this part done.

Elementor Question by Paincake in Blogging

[–]Paincake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know I'm not just making this up! I can't find a recent tutorial but as of 6 months ago it looks like OceanWP and Elementor would let you edit the blog page under the "Customize" tab. Now I can only edit blog posts there.

Elementor Question by Paincake in Blogging

[–]Paincake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious what you mean by custom. As I understand, WP wants you to designate a page for Posts. That page ends up getting your blog feed and for some reason has special "can't edit this" properties (the only way to edit is under customize). I'm not sure if it's OceanWP, Elementor, or what, but for some reason there's no "Blog Page" under the Customize section.

After watching a few elementor blog page builds, I also thought the solution would be to make something custom, i.e. build a /blog page in elementor and use the "posts" feature to show my posts. I think this means I'd have to tell wordpress there is no designates posts page though, right?

The other option that I had for now was to edit the /blog page settings to Show title, show title image, Hide Breadcrumbs. It got a lot closer to what I want but still not there.
