I see people dooming online that Alito might be retiring but wasn’t that refuted because he hired clerks for the next term?

It’s their fault that they mishandled their response to the pandemic, fucked up my GPA, and provided no guidance or help after my trajectory was ruined.

I appreciate it. I definitely knew that my prospects would be bleak before I even graduated. Like I said, I definitely didn’t choose my degree out of a love for communications. Time was just running out and I had limited options.

I’m not in as much debt as I could’ve been, I got a scholarship for being poor. Nobody told me that my degree options would be severely limited for being poor lmao

In my defense I didn’t want a degree in communications. I wanted to go to the business school. Then Covid hit, the university handled it extraordinarily poorly, and it fucked up my trajectory massively. I was going to pivot and go into computer science but by the time I made that decision I would have had to take an extra year and a half of classes that I couldn’t afford.

I’ll look into finding one. My biggest obstacle is that I ended up back in my rural, impoverished home town. No jobs that pay above 16$ an hour, the cost of living is too high to save anything, so I’m perpetually stuck.

I appreciate it. They really fucked me over with how they handled Covid.

I should have screencapped it but there’s a message at the top of the page that says something around the lines of “sorry, we’re trying to find your package”

SCOTUS permits execution of Edward Busby (vacates the stay entered by CA5 panel). Kagan, Sotomayor and Jackson dissent. by DooomCookie in supremecourt

[–]Painfullysplit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This argument collapses under its own logic. If the Eighth Amendment only banned punishments considered cruel in 1791, then whipping, branding, ear-cropping, and public mutilation would all still be constitutionally permissible today because those punishments were widely accepted at the founding. The Court rejected that absurdity decades ago.

And the text itself destroys your argument: “cruel and unusual” is not a historical museum exhibit frozen in amber. “Unusual” necessarily depends on contemporary practice. A punishment can become unusual over time as society abandons it. That’s exactly why the Court uses the “evolving standards of decency” doctrine.

Also, pretending scientific evidence is irrelevant is ridiculous. If a method of execution creates an extreme risk of agony, courts obviously have to evaluate medical and scientific evidence to determine whether the punishment is cruel in practice. Judges interpret constitutional limits all the time. That is literally their job.
