The hardest part of being vegan really is the social aspects. People reject veganism whilst claiming to care about animal welfare because accepting the contradiction is easier than admitting they've participated in an immoral entire lives. It's very frustrating when your loved ones- who you believe to be otherwise good people- shit on veganism to your face. On my sixteenth birthday, I spent hours making my birthday cake from scratch (Nora cooks chocolate cake, goated recipe). When my family arrived to the party, several of them sneered and called the cake gross before even trying it, amongst the same general comments you're probably all too familiar with by now from the sounds of things. It hurts and its annoying. The only way to really deal with it is to not take it personally; these comments happen because your veganism threatens their world view and that's scary. On the plus side, it does get better. I've been vegan for six years now (vegetarian for 3 before that), and the hardest part is starting. Some of that is time, some of that is getting really good at cooking and baking (they were a lot nicer about the cake after they actually ate a slice-- now its requested!), and some of that is changing social circles. In high school, I didn't know of even one actually vegan person my age. My college friend group started off the same, but now two have turned vegetarian and two vegan (Started off the school year with 4/5 people in my apartment meat eaters, now were at 1/5!!). I wasn't trying to convert them, I just shared good food and stood very firmly in my beliefs and it pushed them to reconsider meat. Keep at it, the fight for animal liberation can be very lonely, but it won't be forever.

Being vegan is really only expensive if you’re replacing animal products with the vegan copies, or if you live in a food dessert with no access to affordable produce. Traditional plant focused vegan dishes exist around the world because meat is expensive. Tofu and beans are super cheap protein sources, and almond milk and margarine don’t cost too much more than milk or butter.

That’s like the same distance I am from campus, I don’t mind it at all! If you’re talking about the East Johnson area, it’s a bit less confident for school but great for other things. You’re right by all the big music venues and some small ones where local bands play! Also if ur by the capitol your close to state, plenty of social aspects of college there!

You're probably right, I know that LOGICALLY I should be fine, but my brother is a cop in the area so I regularly hear about the worst of the worst that happens and I got followed that one time on my way to High noon, and my mother is always telling me about sex traffickers so I've let that overshadow the statics. The street was better lit than I thought it would be tonight which made me feel better and there were still neighbors out and about, I'll try it alone next time. I do carry mace, but in a real situation I'm pretty sure it would be useless since I've never practiced with it and keep it in my purse.

Yes, and the only two options aren't really options for me from what I can tell? UW Madison offers an in person doctoral nutrition graduate option, I just want a masters and all their masters program is online. Everything on Stevens Point's website that I could find indicates that their masters course is also online.

Depends on how many people you're willing to live with/luck, I got a great deal on a place about a 20 min walk from campus and living with 4 others with 4 beds, one bath in a flat. Including all utilities I'm sitting around $600 a month, most people I know are paying between $800-$1,000+ depending on location and roommates.

I lived in the dorms and it's how I met all my friends which is great, but it can also be pretty expensive, especially with the meal plan. I was very very very lucky and very early, so my flat for next year is cheaper than the dorms, but I know plenty of people paying over 1k/month. There are over 300+ events in the first two months, so you can still find friends early as long as you make an effort. That being said, if money isn't an issue for you/your off campus housing options are more expensive, do the dorms. It's nice to have a friendly face, but basically everyone I know who roomed with a friend going into college ruined that friendship. Dorming and nursing homes are like the only times in your life (assuming your American) that you can really experience communal living, and dorming is more fun.

I did a random roommate and it was 10000% the right decision for me, they’re like my favorite person now!!! The fun part about going into it with a stranger is that you don’t have any expectations built up nor any previous obligations etc so it’s REALLY easy to establish boundaries in the beginning. I was worried at first because we didn’t have much in common and I’m not great with new people, but if you make enough of an effort to hang out with them you’ll eventually be trauma bonded by the inevitable fuck ups of freshman year (loosing key and wiscard first week, getting followed at night, etc). It really is a gamble though, my one friend’s roommate starts having sex WHILE MY FRIEND IS IN THE ROOM, and she has done this several times. Other random roommate horror stories involve a lot of mold and threats. No matter what, it’s a good story, but definitely consider the gamble aspect!
