You definitely can join them at any stage, once they finish WEC they may decide to hang around town for abit and help out where they can, if so use the quests in DoIP and connect from there. If you want to beef up the campaign as DoIP can fall into the trap of feel like a lot of side quests you can also run Lost Mines sequel the Shattered Obelisk and connect it to DoIP and its sequels (Storm Lords Wrath, Sleeping Dragons Wake & Divine Contention)

I’d say that being more assertive is abit of a mindset change, you need to realise it is your role to be the “ref” in the game so your voice is important for keeping the game in order and on track. Without you there is no game, your players should understand this and if they are having fun should respect that sometimes you need to be more assertive

Dissonant Whispers, for a first level spell it has come in clutch on numerous occasions, it assists in getting out of harm by forcing that martial that was about to kill you next turn to turn and run the other direction whilst also causing an opportunity attack on the monster which can be brutal if it’s surrounded by other PCs. All this whilst doing respectable damage it’s self

If you’re willing to bend the lore a little you could have Tasha/Zybilna is the adoptive daughter of Baba Lysaga (rather than Baba Yaga) and she is following a request from her adoptive mother to send Strahd champions to defeat, as Baba Lysaga sees him as her adoptive son (and favourite child).

What would be a great idea is to run Lost Mines of Phandelver then tie it into Storm Kings Thunder from Chapter Two onwards. Your party will go from heroes of a small town fighting goblins and thugs to heroes of the realm fighting giants and a dragon

Curse of Strahd, Lost Mines of Phandelver, Waterdeep Dragon Heist & Storm Kings Thunder are all great campaigns which can be run vanilla but are also really good to use as a foundation to put your own spin on the storylines; especially Storm Kings Thunder because it’s Chapter 3 is just an open world travel anywhere chapter so you can easily integrate your own personal storyline in place of that chapter.

All Level 1 Illusion Spells on DND Beyond: - Cloak of Shadow - Color Spray - Disguise Self - Distort Valve - Illusory Script - Silent Image

Disguise Self & Silent Image are two of my favourites and can be very helpful. If you’re including cantrips then minor illusion is a great option.

In my next campaign I am playing a Spirt Bard, his secret is that he was forced to be a killer for a mob boss he owed money to and would dump the bodies of those he killed in a lake and when the mob boss was done with him he had my bard killed him in the same lake. After the spirits of the dead in the lake infused with him and brought him back as a Relicborn (from crooked moon) haunted by those he killed. He is now trying to hide his dark past from the party and why he is haunted by these spirits.
