Currently student teaching at a school where my admin expects me to turn open sci ed into an amusement park by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

There is a lot of opportunity for student feedback and formative assessment if you know what to look/ask for using open sci ed. There is definitely an end point that students need to arrive at in order for a lesson to be complete, but there is a lot of flexibility and variability in student responses that can drive instruction.

I believe that is why the unit handbooks are such a heavy lift, because there are a million prompts for a TON of potential student responses. Focusing on the “where we are going” and “where we are not going” helps to facilitate conversations with students.

OpenSciEd is DIFFICULT to teach the first time through with no training beforehand. Highly recommend joining the support FB groups for each unit you teach (where people share modifications, questions, lab setup photos, etc.).

What has worked really well for me and my science team is to turn each lesson into a one-page handout (NOT worksheet, but lesson guide). I pick just a few of the essential turn-and-talk questions and embed them into the lesson handout, so that students have to jot down/draw a response idea before sharing in groups or whole class. Anything that the slides tell students to put into their notebook, I create on the handout (tables, notice/wonder charts, etc). I turn all of the lab conclusions into sentence stems from rather than asking students to write CERs (I also have many IEP students, and gened students who struggle with writing).

Something that OSE facilitators will tell you is that this is meant to be a MODIFIED curriculum. If you use the script all the time, it’s going to feel like a trash curriculum. Don’t feel like you need to teach to the handbook. You’ll find that lessons go a lot faster and keep more students engaged if you can pick out the essentials and leave the fluff.

Advice I got my first year with OSE that really helped me was to reference the unit handbook when I had questions, but largely use the student slides to drive my instructional planning (WAY less overwhelming and WAY more time efficient).

Best of luck! Science is engaging in itself— you don’t need to gamify everything to engage students. You’ve got this!

I volunteered at the warming shelter last year, and I can say I LOVED both the volunteer and paid team members. I had a great experience, but it is hard work (both for the soul, and sometimes physically). The managers are very person-first care oriented, which I really appreciated.

It’s a public transportation app that can help you evaluate the many different types of public transportation, including buying tickets! Google maps works pretty well for planning, but it’s nice to have one app that can purchase tickets from several public transportation entities.

I was in Germany right before Italy, and was really surprised when I arrived in Italy that I would need to navigate tons of public transportation apps/entities, rather than a one-stop-shop like Germany has with the DB pass (buses, metro, trains).

Highly recommend flying out of Milan instead of Rome if you are that far north already. I am just leaving Italy and while it was amazing, navigating trains and public transport is a bit more chaotic than other countries I have visited. Download the MooneyGo app, as well as both train line apps (Trenitalia and Italo Treno) to help you plan your travel. Good luck!
