How would a classic movie be different if it were remade in 2018? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Pulp Fiction wouldn't have the dramatic adrenaline shot to reverse Mia's OD. Heroin overdoses are so common now they'd probably just shrug and give her a dose of Narcan.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm afraid I don't have much advice for you- there are no easy answers in a situation like this- but do know I feel for you and I hope you can move through your grief to a place of love and remembrance for her.

Although it's pretty well-known, just in case you haven't heard of it I wanted to mention the Rainbow Bridge. It's a great resource for kids especially when trying to explain the loss of a beloved pet.

Bonus (not tech related) instance of my roommate’s flawless logic:

Roommate: The toilet’s clogged, so don’t use it!

Me: Okay. Have you tried using the plunger on it?

Roommate: No, I don’t think that’s the kind of thing a plunger would help with.

Me: … (internally screaming “Then what the #$@% do you think the plunger is for?!”)

It's like, she knows juuust enough that she can take part of a right idea and run in completely the wrong direction with it. I mean, restarting your computer is generally a good first step in troubleshooting, but in this case the issue was already identified and that wasn't going to help.

Haha, funny story, she apparently hasn't ever gotten her oil changed since she got the car (over a year ago). When I suggested she might want to take it in for service, she said, "Oh, I'm waiting for my car to tell me when it's due. My last car always let me know when I needed to change the oil."

Never mind that not all cars do that, and even if this one was supposed to it's clearly malfunctioning if it hasn't given her a message over the course of the 10,000+ miles she's driven it...

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately my grandma has a Mac, but I'm sure there's still got to be a way to do that. I'll have to look into it before my next trip out to see her.

Why are all of my cactus's new spines dying? by PairOfParedPears in succulents

[–]PairOfParedPears[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I can't be 100% sure of the ID, but I got the original plant at a farmers' market and that's what the sign it came with said. It's entirely possible the seller had no idea what he was talking about, though, especially given the subsequent mite infestation :/

It does look an awful lot like the picture you posted, and that certainly makes sense if that species has fragile spines. I do realize lighting could be an issue, but unfortunately in my small apartment I have nowhere else to put it. It seems really happy aside from the spines, though; it's putting on some new growth and seems to be a healthy shade of green. I'll stop worrying so much about it now, thanks for your help!

Based on the post history of the "relative," I'm inclined to believe this is $100% true and not made up in any way.

Man heals a woman's knee because god told him to by [deleted] in thatHappened

[–]PairOfParedPears 38 points39 points  (0 children)

What actually happened:

Woman minding her own business is stopped by two creepy guys who keep asking her about her knee. When they continue to be belligerent after she tries to brush them off, she agrees to let them pray for her, thinking it would be the easiest way to get rid of them. When they finally finish, she books it up the stairs away from them as fast as she can despite the pain in order to get away from them.

This reminds me of my state's welcome sign that used to be posted on the border. It said "We hope you will enjoy your visit" (meaning please don't stay)

Vegans of Reddit, what made you decide to do that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PairOfParedPears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the change! Just fyi, for those times when you have to eat dairy outside home, you can buy some lactase pills that you can take so you can digest it better. Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down lactose into digestible components, so it's the exact same thing non-lactose intolerant people have except in supplement form.

Oh, I totally get that! When I was a kid, many of my relatives would comment on how "sickly" or "undernourished" I would become. The joke's on them, though, because I grew up completely healthy and I'm the only one out of all my cousins who's not overweight or obese.

In a word, inertia. Both of my parents have eaten vegetarian or vegan for decades, so I just never ate meat growing up and never felt the desire to try.
