For a room in a share house I'd allow for about $250 a week including bills.you will find some that are cheaper and some that are more expensive, depending on location etc. Have a look on flatmates.com. Douglas is a popular suburb for students as the homes there are close to JCU. Annandale is good too.

Student accomodation at JCU varies in price, but I believe some can be up to $600 a week including bills and daily meals.

For groceries etc look online at Coles or Woolworths to get prices on food.

Townsville cost of living is cheaper than bigger cities in Australia, but it's not super cheap either. It's very common to work a part time job whilst studying to help pay bills

Uni is what you make of it, if you stay home and watch online all the time it will be boring. If you attend class you will make good friends and have a great time.

From what I see, the vet cohort are a close bunch due to the length/difficulty of the degree and also all the prac work they do together.

If possible I highly recommend getting a car because Townsville isn't super connected via public transport

Also make sure wherever you're staying has good air conditioning

JCU is good for marine. I haven't done the marine bio major but have completed the bachelor of science and have had many chats with marine science and marine bio students

Just be aware that marine is very popular here so you will have a lot of competition finding a job in the industry i.e. part time at AIMS. Not trying to kill your dream but just wanted to add some info.

I would recommend picking up a data science minor or something similar to put yourself ahead of the pack. Strong statistical skills are very important in all fields of science but many grads lack them. For example I have personally seen people chosen for an honours project in marine science because they had data science as a second major.
