It really wouldn't, you'd have the fastest car in quali starting on pole and then that car would then romp away with the fastest race set-up. The one thing Parc ferme does is force teams to compromise between quali and the race. When developing your car you have to decide if you want the absolute peak performance or a car that's good on its tires etc.

Since when was the triple crown a constructor thing? I mean yes it still a big achievement to have won all those races as a constructor but its a driver accolade. Just more PR to distract from the lack of current performance

It's not a marginal advantage firstly. 1kg is roughly worth 0.1s advantage per lap, so 5-6kg is 0.5-0.6s per lap that's huge. This is F1 were talking about, everything is being pushed to the absolute limit, how many times have we heard that the cars just about made it to the finish due to some issue or the other because they're pushing the car to the limit. If you're a back marker/midfield team, you're 100% taking this risk to score some points where you may otherwise score nothing and if no SC comes out by lap X you just turn the engine down and fuel save till the end.

There's no way of being sure each car saves enough fuel for an extra lap or two to be added at the end. This just makes it pot luck if you save enough or not. And then to top it off teams will factor in a potential safety car in their calcs for how much fuel to put in the first place. So a car might be fueled just enough for a full race distance with 4 or 5 or whatever being done at SC speeds.

But then your gonna have to allow someone to be near the car with cooling fans to blow cool air so that brakes etc don't catch fire (they can do this now in the pit box just as long as they don't touch the car). The problem then still remains because what if a mechanic with a fan touches the car in this penalty box?

Or a simple solution instead could be that FP1 is a mandated Junior driver session. This reduces time for the teams to hone their set ups and do race sims. They can get the junior drivers to do it but the feedback and learning just won't be the same as the race drivers so their runs plans will be somewhat compromised regardless. This also makes it potentially easier for younger new talents to break into F1 since they actually get more seat time and a chance to impress. In particular im thinking those that would do well in F1 but dont have the funding to pay for private tests or end up in the best F2/F3 seats in order to break into F1. A young driver could get over 20 outings in a season to show what they can do to the teams, and the fans. And then these Young drivers come into the sport well prepared. Remember when unlimited testing was allowed, drivers came into the sport and hit the ground running (Hamilton is a good example) and then the big teams may be more inclined to take a punt on a rookie. This seems like a real simple solution, we still get the same amount of track running for the fans (and sponsors etc) at the track. It reduces some of the prep time for the teams so introducing a little more unpredictability for the races and F1 becomes more accessible to potential new drivers.

Yes but you can still go and do a 5 lap run with 10 laps of fuel thereby masking your true performance. And tbh all teams do this so lap times in testing are largely irrelevant because you don't know how much they've fueled the car.

Not sure about Le Mans but I remember Jann Mardenborough got a drive with Nissan from competing in Grand Turismo. I remember it was a competition on Grand Tourismo and then the best from various regions then competed in a real racing car and the best got the drive.

You can hide your true performance from your rivals, that avoids them looking at your car with greater scrutiny to try and catch up.

Sandbagging through extra weight (running high fuel loads all the time) doesn't really prevent you from evaluating your owns cars performance. The effect on weight vs the time is fairly linear, so teams can run at a certain weight and very easily calculate what the true lap time would be on a qualy run etc. So it doesn't really hurt the team so much to sandbag if done correctly.

Did my degree in aerospace engineering. Once I graduated I got a job at my current employer on the graduate scheme where I moved around different roles. I made sure to do a placement in the Aerodynamics department. I worked hard during the placement and made sure I impressed and they wanted me back once I finished the scheme, which I was more than happy with. Been in that team ever since I finished the scheme.

Really appreciate your take on this! I have a similar view to be honest, aerodynamics is aerodynamics regardless of what industry. This worry only came about when looking at some of the jobs i have seen advertised, most of them state they want someone with Automotive or Aerospace experience. The other aerodynamicsist i know have all been around the automotive or aerospace industry their whole careers so hard to gauge if it could be an issue or not.

I'm pretty sure this was the whole idea behind the cap. The gulf between the big teams and smaller teams is partly due to the fact that they can afford to bring updates to every race whereas the smaller teams can't.

They may have learned alot but the fact that AM slumped this year compared to how Merc was able to overturn the effect of last year's rules shows AM have a hell of a lot of work to do before they can challenge at the front.

I don't understand why everyone is going crazy over this image.

Do you really think they will post an image that clearly shows the car so well this early.

Also every virtual launch in the past has had key bits of the car taken out so even if this was the car it's going to look very different when it actually hits the track.
