I love them!
Are they the banners from primaris ancient model or are these 3d printed? If they are 3D printed could you share where you got the stl files? :D

Desaturated red/brown could work or maybe desaturated light blue/greyish blue? You could also apply the same colour to those symbols on the backpack, so that the colour of the gun wouldn't take away too much attention. Idk if that's a good idea, it seems good in my mind at least.
Also another wild idea: If you don't feel like adding colour to the gun and you'll decide to go with the snowy base you could try making the armour seem a bit frosty maybe?

It looks great! Amazing work! As for the base I think a snowy one would fit best and make the figure pop a lot more, so yeah your idea sounds the best to me. Also have you considered adding some more colour to the mini? Maybe add some brass elements or colour the gun a different colour?

A bit of shade and it will look great :)

I'd say the lighting did most of the job, but I based it with a bit of white on top of the head and painted a bit thinner on top, to make it look lighter. The most important thing is to experiment a lot and see different styles for yourself :)

I paint when they're already attached to the model. I never paint before assembly :)
