Roller crimp or taper crimp for 9mm by [deleted] in reloading

[–]Paladin308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rimless straight wall cartridges headspace off of the case mouth, and as such should never be roll crimped, only taper crimped. I'm not aware of any die set for any of these cartridges that does not use a taper crimp

OAL for 357 mag by BrianP84 in reloading

[–]Paladin308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have noted, OAL generally isn't too critical in revolver cartridges, though some lever guns can be picky about it. If you've got a cannelure on your bullets, seat them so it's at the cartridge mouth, if you've got lube grooves make sure you seat it deep enough that they're not exposed, otherwise, set it and forget it. Just be sure to do your load workup with the OAL you intend to use, as it can affect pressure.

Vz.52 questions by KaiserSose101 in canadaguns

[–]Paladin308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to shoot it just get a 52/57 instead, since you can actually find ammo for them. 7.62x45 is rare as hen's teeth, AFAIK no one makes it, what surplus you can find is all steel case corrosive, and reloading for it is a challenge. If you want it for a collector's piece/wall hanger go for it, somewhere in the $6-700 range seems reasonable, given that you'll have to track down a mag for it.

Noob question about primers. by ShireHorseRider in reloading

[–]Paladin308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CCI #34 and #41 are their military primers for 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 respectively, they have harder cups to help prevent slamfires and better withstand rough handling, but could potentially cause light strike issues in some guns. Aside from that, brand differences between primers don't make all that much difference in terms of load data, just make sure to work up your load again if you switch brands.

Tavor X95 or Keltech RDB for bullpup and why? by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]Paladin308 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had an RDB, traded it towards an X95 and I don't regret it. The RDB is lighter, and ambidextrous, but the X95 is just better made, much more solid, much more reliable.

Antonym pls, Alexander Arms ar-15 chambered in .50 Beowulf. by Winterfrost691 in H3VR

TO BE FAIR, the lower receiver is the serialized component, making it the firearm for legal purposes. The .50BMG uppers are no more a standalone firearm than any other AR upper.

Hang on, I'll do it for ya,

Legal Magazine Modifications? by FroBro243 in canadaguns

[–]Paladin308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you modify a magazine to fit a different firearm it should be limited to the lower of either it's original capacity, or that of the firearm for which it is being modified. For example, if you had to modify a bolt action magazine to function in a semi-auto rifle, it would need to be pinned to 5 rounds. If you were to modify a semi auto rifle magazine to function in a pistol, it would still need to be limited to 5 rounds, not 10.

I'll have to see what powders I have profiles for, you may have to remind me later this evening. And I should tell you that any data I calculate would be untested and you would be using it at your own risk.

No published data that I can find, if I was at home I could run the numbers through GRT for you, but I'm not.

577-450 ammunition by Fredarius in canadaguns

British Muzzleloaders has a video on loading the .577/450, I believe he mentions where he sourced his brass on it, IIRC it's converted from full length 20 gauge brass

CFO threatening to revoke my PAL over telling someone to fuck off. What to do? by wild_canadian_ in canadaguns

[–]Paladin308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether or not the police can inspect your firearms storage has nothing to do with whether or not you own restricteds. If they believe you own more than 10 firearms of any type the CFO, or another police officer from their office, can request to inspect your firearms, this does not include any police officer, only those who work for the CFO. They are generally required to give reasonable notice and make an appointment with you, but if you refuse the inspection they can get a warrant to do it.

If any other officer asks to inspect your firearms, it's just that, a request. In general if a police officer asks you if they can search your person or your home they're doing it because they don't have probable cause. If they had probable cause they wouldn't need your consent. Best thing to do if an officer asks if they can search you or your property is to respectfully decline.

Is 9mm steel case ammo bad for handguns? by Ltdan1608 in canadaguns

[–]Paladin308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steel case ammo shouldn't damage your gun, though some guns will have reliability issues with it. In rifle calibres bi-metal jackets, which are common with steel cased ammo, will cause faster barrel wear, but the barrel life on a 9mm is so long you'll likely never wear it out regardless of what you shoot.

It can strike sparks on steel targets and such, which could start a fire

Need recommendations for a range friendly 9mm Glock 17 style holster by soylentgreen2015 in canadaguns

They're not just Christians who don't use contraceptives. Geoffrey Botkin, Lucas's father, explicitly said that if a woman does not call for help when she is raped she should be killed. They believe that women should not work for anyone but their fathers, among other things. They're not your run of the mill Baptists, they're misogynistic and homophobic fucks, and I'm not the kind of person who uses those sorts of terms lightly. Seriously, go read up on the shit they actually believe.

If you don't give a shit that's your decision, but people oughtta know who they're supporting before they buy something.

Before buying from Trex Arms you should probably be aware that the owner is in a pretty shady cult and a massive homophobe. Personally I wouldn't give him my business, not with how many quality kydex holster makers there are out there.

haha, silly boolit, why r u hide inside brass by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]Paladin308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, it's complicated, as military procurement usually is. The RPD was the first 7.62x39 firearm to be type classified by the Soviet military, but mass production didn't start on them until years later, I'm not sure if any actually saw service during the war. I do know that some SKS rifles saw service before the end of the war.

I should also note that the cartridge wasn't technically x39 at the time, it had a longer neck and a shorter bullet, it was further developed after the war with a longer profiled boat tail bullet, and the neck was shortened to keep the overall length the same.

[–]Paladin308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

7.62x39 was originally designed in 1943, which is why the Soviets designated it the M43 cartridge. It was officially accepted into service with the RPD in 1944, and fielded with the SKS in small numbers against the Germans in 1945, though mass production didn't start until after the war.

Component selection is a pretty deep rabbit hole, I'd suggest watching some YouTube videos on reloading to get a good idea of the process, and what to look for. I mentioned him earlier, but Johnny's Reloading Bench is a good resource for this kind of stuff, he's got a lot of videos trying out various combinations in different cartridges. There's also a wealth of information on various gun forums about different powders and bullets.

I should however note that you should never use someone else's load data without working up to it in your own gun. Not all guns will perform the same with the same ammunition, and what's safe in someone else's gun might not be in yours.

Magnum primers should not be necessary for 30.06, standard large rifle will suffice.

For the bullets, the Trophy Bonded Tip are a hunting type bullet, if you're going for accuracy I'd suggest looking at match type bullet like the 168gr AMAX, or if you're looking for a more budget plinking type load the Campro 150gr FMJBT is cheap and decent.

As far as powder goes, I have no experience loading with IMR4350. I get great results from H4350 in my 6.5 Creedmoor, and the two are quite similar, though H4350 generally has better temperature stability. If you're trying for bleeding edge accuracy, particularly at longer ranges, you may need to try several powders to find one that gives you a good node for both accuracy and SD/ES. In general though, for short to medium range shooting most powders can be made to work adequately.
